Huguette Marcelle Clark: A Portrait of the Artist -- First Exhibition of Famed Heiress’ Paintings in Over 90 Years Now at Santa Barbara Historical Museum

Santa Barbara Historical Museum

Stories about copper heiress Huguette Clark (1906–2011) have captivated the news media and public. Though she stayed out of the public eye in her later years, she was a talented artist who held exhibitions of her paintings in both New York and Paris as a young woman. Clark’s artwork is now on view to the public for the first time since 1931 at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum, presented in collaboration with the Bellosguardo Foundation. “Huguette Marcelle Clark: A Portrait of the Artist” is on exhibit through June 12, 2022. (Note: Huguette is pronounced hyoo-GETT.) Never before publicly seen images from Clark’s recently rediscovered personal photo album and ephemera from her scrapbooks are also displayed, giving glimpses of her at work in her art studio and from her private life at her Bellosguardo estate and elsewhere in Santa Barbara from the 1910s through the 1940s. For more information, visit www.sbhistorical.org. “We wanted to show the breadth of Huguette Clark’s talent,” said Dacia Harwood, director of the Santa Barbara Historical Museum. “She lived a fascinating life, and we’ve learned more about her time in our community while preparing this exhibition.” Clark has been the subject of extensive media coverage and several books, including New York Times bestselling “Empty Mansions: The Mysterious Life of Huguette Clark and the Spending of a Great American Fortune” by Bill Dedman. Clark painted throughout her time in Santa Barbara, first at Meridian Studios on East De la Guerra Street (located next to the current site of the Historical Museum) from 1933 to 1935 while the Bellosguardo estate was being built, and then in her studio in the estate. As a younger woman Clark evidenced a wide-ranging interest in the arts as a painter, musician, and collector of beauty: decorative and fine art, costumes, exquisitely fashioned dolls, and fine jewels. Trained by renowned portraitist Tadeusz (Tadé) Styka [pronounced Taa-DEY-uw-sh (Tejd) STY-ka], she built a deep body of work throughout her long life. The exhibition presents self-portraits, portraits, a still life, and images of a Japanese geisha, a ballerina, and a Spanish dancer, among others. Styka’s portrait of Clark is also on view. As the residual beneficiary of Clark’s estate, the Bellosguardo Foundation received an extensive collection of her paintings. Several of the works selected, all oils, were conserved in anticipation of the exhibition. The Foundation has also shared a selection of personal items from her photo albums and scrapbooks which illustrate her life from her childhood and early life in Santa Barbara. The 23-acre oceanfront estate Bellosguardo was redesigned and rebuilt after the 1925 earthquake by Anna Clark, widow of Senator William Andrews Clark, and then passed to Huguette. At one time, Senator Clark was the second richest man in America. Following her death in 2011 at age 104, the property was bequeathed to the Bellosguardo Foundation with the goal of transforming it into a focal point for art and culture in Santa Barbara and beyond. Visit www.bellosguardo.org. The Santa Barbara Historical Museum is located in downtown Santa Barbara at 136 East de la Guerra Street. Admission is free. Hours are currently Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. and Thursdays from noon to 7 p.m. Visit www.sbhistorical.org. The Museum’s mission is to create meaningful connections to Santa Barbara history. The signature installation, The Story of Santa Barbara, traces our community’s story from the Chumash to the mid 20th century. Accessible and diverse community programming along with rotating exhibitions feature dynamic local traditions, art, and historical events. Visitors also experience the Edward Borein Gallery, the Gledhill Research Library, and two historic adobes. Visit www.sbhistorical.org. Contact Details Julia McHugh +1 805-569-3303 julia@juliapr.com

British viewers average over 4 hours of TV time per person a day

Intelligiants

UK viewers average over 4 hours of TV time per person a day UK produced TV shows attract global interest on multiple platforms Gala Bingo presents interesting facts around UK TV shows and series The amount of TV shows that are produced in the UK, streamed globally, are reaching all-time highs around the world. Nowadays, there are even series that compete with the classics from the golden age of TV and the likes of Sopranos, 24 and OZ. Series like Downton Abby and Peaky Blinders (originally BBC) are already considered modern classics, and it was reported that Amazon and Netflix doubled their spending on production costs for UK series between 2017-2018. Gala Bingo has recently released a handful of blog posts that take a closer look at the biggest wins in game shows, what the favorite TV moments were during 2021 and in their latest post, a TV show quiz where you try to guess the programme and see just how much of a binger you really are. David Winter, Marketing Manager of Gala Bingo, explains that “ the quiz is more of a tribute, rather than a self-diagnostic tool, to all the great shows that we have seen over the last few years, especially for the shows produced in the UK. We truly embrace and appreciate the technological steps that we have been blessed with in the entertainment industry over the last few years, bringing us our favorite pastime entertainment through streaming and on-demand solutions. ” The fight for the market share of subscribers to streaming services was more of an US-centric battle just a few years back, with viewers in the rest of the world having to wait for releases of movies and TV shows in their respective regions. This is not the case anymore and it is safe to assume that most households have subscriptions not just to Netflix, which dominated the market for years, but now also are signed up for several other local or national services from Sky to Prime TV, even Disney Plus to Apple TV. There is an abundance of choice and there seems to be room for more than one giant streaming network, with the landscape having changed as audiences just keep on growing through all age groups, nationwide. Gala Bingo shares some of their images here for you to try out your TV show knowledge. The Alliance for Education Releases Annual Report Demonstrating Support for Seattle Students

Alliance for Education

The Alliance for Education (the Alliance), Seattle’s only local education fund, released their 2021 annual report today. The report highlights the success of Alliance programs that support students, families, and teachers across all 106 Seattle public schools. According to the annual report, one program in particular, the Right Now Needs Fund, fulfilled 12,617 individual requests for support for students and families at Seattle Public Schools in the past year. The Right Now Needs Fund works directly at the school level to provide funding for clothing, food, health, internet, and housing costs for students and families across Seattle Public Schools, allowing students to focus on learning by supporting their success within and beyond the classroom. According to the report, of the requests fulfilled from September 2020 to August 2021, 56 percent provided food, 31 percent went toward shelter for students and families, six percent provided school supplies, six percent for clothing, and one percent funded internet costs. Since its launch in 2018 with a generous donation from Amazon, the Right Now Needs Fund has reported more than 35,000 individual instances of support for students and families across all 106 schools. “Our students succeed when they have access to an education system that equitably supports every student in Seattle’s diverse community. As an independent, local education fund, we act quickly to convene community partners to address these challenges by developing, investing, and partnering in programs and pathways that increase equity for Seattle students. We rely on the generous donations of our community to design, implement, and fund the programs and pathways that make Seattle Public Schools an equitable school system where our students thrive,” said Lisa Chick, CEO of the Alliance for Education. In addition to the Right Now Needs Fund, the Alliance raises funds and develops programs that address existing inequities preventing students from receiving the education they deserve. The 2021 annual report demonstrates the impact of its fundraising for the following programs that support Seattle teachers, students, and their families. The Seattle Teacher Residency program was developed in partnership with the University of Washington, Seattle Education Association, and Seattle Public Schools to train educators to teach in culturally and linguistically diverse communities. The program places diverse cohorts of highly-qualified teachers in Title I schools which are most impacted by poverty. Currently, 155 Seattle Teacher Residency graduates teach in Seattle Public Schools. The Education Equity Fund was created by the Alliance to serve Seattle students, families, and teachers during times of crisis. During the pandemic, the fund provided 10,000 laptops, 24/7 tech support, teacher training for remote learning, 25,000 meals for students, and more. The Alliance supported the creation of the Office of African American Male Achievement at Seattle Public Schools by raising $2.5 million to fuel its first three years of work. The Office of African American Male Achievement is the first of its kind in Washington, creating a framework that aligns strategy and practices across the district to ensure Seattle Public Schools has the culture, conditions, staff competencies, and community connections in place for all Black boys and teens to excel in their education. Together these programs offer necessary support to help Seattle students receive an excellent and equitable education to reach their fullest potential. Learn more about the Alliance’s philanthropic partnerships and programming impacts in the recently released annual report. ### The Alliance for Education works in close partnership with Seattle Public Schools and other community partners to convene stakeholders, create programs and raise funds designed to advance educational justice and racial equity in Seattle’s public school system. Popular Gifting Trends for Mother's Day

YourUpdateTV

A video accompanying this announcement is available at: https://youtu.be/SdtdOyh8kmE Sunday, May 8 th is Mother’s Day, the perfect time to honor all the moms in your life. According to the National Retail Federation, shoppers planned on spending about $220 on Mother’s Day gifts in 2021. That number is expected to go up this year, due in part to limited COVID restrictions, various consumer deals, and the popularity of online shopping—including free shipping and easy return policies. Online searches have determined a few of this year’s biggest Mother’s Day gifting trends. As expected, flowers, jewelry, and sweets topped the list. However, restaurant-related searches and electronics are seeing record levels of spending this year. A recent Microsoft survey discovered more than 20% of mothers said they would like a spa visit. This is aligned with another shopping trend, which is shopping and supporting local businesses. Industry insiders say Mother’s Day is one of the biggest retail holidays of the year and expect to see more than $25 billion in spending in 2022. Fister has some gifting tips to help make mom’s heart melt this upcoming Mother’s Day. SKIN IS IN: Mother’s Day is less than a week away and Fister say’s it’s always a good idea to think outside of the box. Skincare is one of the first things that comes to her mind for this year’s Mother’s Day. The Beauty Expert says, “I’m really loving the high-performance Korean skincare brand, Sulwhasoo,” pointing out their Bestsellers Trial Kit, which features a few favorites, including their #1 selling First Care Activating Serum. It’s a radiance enhancing, anti-aging serum that also helps boost the absorption of following skincare products used on top.” The First Care Radiance Set is a limited edition 4-piece set of bestsellers that either clears impurities, amplifies hydration, or smooths one’s complexion for an everlasting glow. The beauty and lifestyle expert says, “Now’s the time to help moms live happier and healthier lives.” As a mom, Fister points out that finding balance is incredibly important. This includes everyday feelings of being run down, stressed out, or in need of a little R&R. Fister’s view on self-care is loud and clear, “I’m loving The Good Patch.” This brand makes plant-powered wearable wellness patches for life’s everyday struggles, such as sleep and stress. Fister highlights that the patches are easy to use. The consumer just peels & sticks the patch to their wrist (or any venous area). The B12 Awake patch gives a user’s day a boost. It’s made with caffeine, green tea, and vitamin B12. Perfect for getting through that afternoon slump. The Relax patch is perfect for unwinding and decompressing on stressful days. It’s made with ashwagandha, passionflower, and rhodiola. “Perfect for dealing with the “joys” of parenting,” Fister jokes. The Dream patch is for getting some quality sleep. It’s made with 10mg melatonin, valerian root, and hops. This is ideal for travel, red-eyes, or even just a good nap. Fister says The Good Patches can be worn all day, delivering a sustained release of ingredients over 8-12 hours. They are available at Target, ULTA, and CVS. For more information, go to TheGoodPatch.com Direct link: https://thegoodpatch.com/ Social media handles: Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok: @thegoodpatch KEEP IT SOFT & STYLISH: The popularity of athleisure in the fashion industry continues to boom. Fister says it will definitely be noticeable this Mother’s Day, adding, “Who doesn’t love stylish leggings, sweatpants, and loungewear? They’ve become staples to our wardrobes… have they not, ladies?!? This year, she says a fun idea is for moms to coordinate with their mini, otherwise known as their daughter. “A brand I love is Spiritual Gangster,” says Fister, adding, “This brand is my go-to for leggings, soft fleece sweats, and fun graphic styles all rooted in optimism which I think we can all use more of right now. They also have a fantastic Mini Me Collection.” The beauty and lifestyle expert says the feminine floral active set has a matching girls legging that are both made from eco-conscious performance fabric— a super soft blend of recycled fibers and cooling yarns. Fister points out, “I also love the girl’s pink sweats! Made to match the women’s style —the girl’s Bridget raglan pull-over sweatshirt made in soft and cozy cotton terry pairs perfectly with the matching sweat pant. It’s a pretty in pink moment moms and daughters will both love.” For more information, go to SpiritualGangster.com Direct link: https://spiritualgangster.com/collections/mini-me-kids Social media handles: Facebook: @ SPIRITUALGANG Instagram: @ SPIRITUALGANGSTER Pinterest: @SPIRITUALGANGSTERLOVE STAY ON TREND: Fister says this year’s Mother’s Day gifting ideas even includes a new fashion trend. “This year, it’s really all about embracing vibrancy and joy—bold prints, micro-textures, and florals. It’s the season for moms to look and feel fabulous,” Fister adds, “From mothers and daughters to sisters and friends, Ramy Brook is a woman-owned business with styles that can be worn by women of all ages.” Ramy’s signature use of silk fabrics, lively colors, and sophisticated silhouettes immediately caught Fister’s eye. She is impressed by the collections intent to be a day-to-night solution in a woman’s wardrobe. She continues, “Another thing that means so much to me, is how the brand’s vision is for women to feel beautiful and confident—knowing they’re sexy, wearing something special, and looking their absolute best.
