Global Business Ethics Survey: Top managers twice as likely to experience pressure to bend the rules in organizations.

Employees are twice as likely to experience pressure if they are top-management than compared to line-level employees, according to the Ethics & Compliance Initiative’s ™ (ECI) latest Global Business Ethics Survey Report ™ (GBES) . The data suggest that the higher up the “totem pole” an employee is, the more likely they are to experience pressure to bend the rules. Overall, about 1 in 5 employees experience pressure to bend the rules. Pressure to bend the rules, as defined by the GBES report , can be caused by meeting performance goals, attempting to save one's own and others' jobs, supervisory pressure, advancing one's career or financial interests, and demands from people who support or invest in the organization. According to the data, of those that experience pressure, 30% are top management employees, 25% are middle management, 22% are first-line supervisors and 17% are individual contributors. The first 2020 report of ECI’s premier, longitudinal study on global workplace behavior, published four times per year, also found that when top management show a strong commitment to ethical leadership and organizational values, their employees are 3X less likely to experience pressure. “The data continue to suggest that high-pressure environments are not only stressful for employees, but they can actually cause a negative ROI when it comes to ethical behavior,” said Patricia Harned, CEO of ECI. “Expanding KPIs and stretching financial goals may result in a short-term gain, but the long-term consequences to the organization is a net negative.” Other Findings and Key Indicators of Pressure The report found that employees experiencing pressure was linked with the prevalence of observing various types of misconduct found in organizations across the globe, all of which were about twice as likely to occur in pressure environments versus non-pressure environments. Employees are twice as likely to observe misconduct in organizations where they feel pressure to compromise ethics standards. “As companies around the globe respond to the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the important research in ECI’s Global Business Ethics Survey (GBES) report presents a timely and accurate overview of pressure in the workplace,” said Michele M. ADS TARGET NBA & LEBRON FOR CHINA HYPOCRISY

Through its Freedom4China campaign , the National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC) is running social media ads targeting LeBron James and the National Basketball Association (NBA). The online ads are directed to the bubble at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, where the NBA season is currently underway. The ads state “Not All Heroes Are 6’9” with an image of Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James. Clicking through, the viewer is brought to a page highlighting the heroism of the Tiananmen Square “Tank Man.” It reads: Tank Man’s name is not known, nor is his fate. Tank Man was filmed in Tiananmen Square on June 5, 1989, stepping in front of a column of 59 tanks. The day before, the Peoples’s Liberation Army crushed student-led, pro-democracy protests. The death toll is estimated from several hundred to several thousand. The footage of the Tank Man is widely regarded as one of the most iconic photographic images of all time. Yet it is censored on the internet in China, and most young Chinese have never seen it. Even though we do not know his name, we can take inspiration from his courage and willingness to sacrifice for a cause larger than himself. The Tank Man legacy will outlast that of any pampered millionaire athlete playing in a taxpayer-supported arena. http://freedom4china.com/ In October 2019, LeBron James criticized Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey as “misinformed” and “not educated” after Morey’s October 4th Tweet that stated, “Fight for Freedom. Done in collaboration with Crayola, The State of the Consumer: Preparing for an Uncertain School Year , found that as the school year quickly approaches, parents are preparing to take on a multitude of roles, creating new opportunities for brands to engage and support them. The Back to School report found that parents across the nation are split on how they plan to tackle the new year and feel uncertainty, nervousness, panic, and worry mainly due to the implications of COVID-19. Despite 73% reporting that they are “trying” or “trying very hard” to maintain their pre-COVID-19 schedules, the reality is that 83% saw a change. “This year, parents are also teachers, chefs, disciplinarians, and entertainers,” said Suzy President Avi Savar. “They are playing so many new roles and this new territory opens the door for brands to step in and provide value and resources as parents take on these new challenges.” Virtual Learning Of the parents surveyed, 89% believe their child(ren)’s schools are handling COVID “somewhat well” or “very well” in terms of communicating about the upcoming school year as well as learning options. In fact, 34% of schools have made a formal decision to teach classes in-person and virtually this year. Despite 33% expecting remote teaching to be better in the upcoming school year, parents remain hesitant on deciding whether to send their children to a physical campus. The report found that the biggest reason for parents wanting to send their kids back to school is their desire to see their children receive the full scope of education. With only 37% of parents feeling as though their children have adapted well to online learning, it will become increasingly crucial for brands to offer tools that help parents feel empowered to drive more optimal learning outcomes. Back-to-School Spending When it comes to back-to-school spending, 30% of parents reported they had a standard list of items they purchase each year. Still, with the ever-changing status of school closures and COVID-related restrictions, 44% are holding off purchases while waiting to hear from schools/teachers on what school supplies are needed for the school year. The Suzy report stated that electronics is the most popular category for school purchases this year. Suzy expects to see increased purchases from brands such as HP and Lenovo as well as increased use of online resources and apps for learning, such as ABC Mouse, Netflix, YouTube kids, Google, and Wikipedia. Suzy also anticipates a shift in the purchasing of physical supplies. Parents who typically buy lunch boxes (38%) have reported that they will not purchase new ones this year. World’s largest Urdu-language festival goes online

Jashn-e-Rekhta 2020 (“Festival of Urdu language”) will present a finely curated artistic programme representing the rich tapestry of Urdu culture & heritage . The sixth edition of the world’s largest Urdu-language festival was to be hosted outside India for the first time, in London this year. However, given COVID-19 measures and in the spirit of the show must go on , organisers have taken it online, but it promises to be a fully immersive and interactive experience for attendees. The two-day cultural event is a virtual re-creation of the annual Jashn-e-Rekhta festival that takes place in Delhi, India. The online event will be easy to join and will showcase exclusive sessions and will open a digital archive of art forms including poetry (mushaira), literature, storytelling (dastangoi), ghazals, sufi music, qawwali as well as dance & drama. It is the brainchild of Sanjiv Saraf, who set up the Rekhta Foundation in 2012 which has curated world’s largest online free repository of Urdu language poetry on Rekhta.org (it is visited by over 300,000 people every month from 175 countries). Some highlights, as well as those made especially for the UK, include: Javed Akhtar and Manoj Muntashir, poets and lyricists from two different generations present ‘ Cinema – Kal aur Aaj’ – a conversation around films, lyrics and Urdu poetry. Dr. Azra Raza, the highly acclaimed physicist, scientist and author presents the world of Ghalib in her grand style. The play ‘Miya, Biwi aur Wagah’ - an Indo-Pak story told through letters by the UAE based journalist duo Amna Khaishgi & Ehtesham Shahid, will be screened, marking its first ever screening in the UK region. Zia Mohyeddin will recite Padhant and Anwar Maqsood will share Aina Khane Mein Lafz Yawar Abbas relives the golden years of radio with fellow broadcasters Raza Ali Abidi and Pervaiz Alam . Sania Saeed, renowned Pakistani actor, Tanuja Chandra , Indian film director, and Nasreen Munni Kabir, filmmaker and author, will discuss the contribution of Urdu to the world of cinema and television. Celebrating the 500th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev , another specially curated session of music and poetry will be showcased. Talat Aziz and Shilpa Rao from India and Rafaqat Ali Khan from Pakistan will partake in a session titled ‘Ghazal Gayaki – Aathve Sur ki talaash’ where they’ll talk about the traditions of Ghazal singing, the aesthetics and how can be best connect the millennials with our traditions.
