A CAT bond is a high-yield debt security that is designed to help raise money for insurance companies in the event of a natural disaster. CAT bonds typically yield between 6% and 8%, and during profitable years with no major disasters, bondholders collect their interest and realize a profit. Unfortunately, during unprofitable years that are marked by natural disasters and damage, CAT bondholders could lose their entire investment.
