WEED AND WHISKEY NEWS SIGNS ON AS PARTNER FOR WILLIE NELSON'S LUCK SUMMIT.

W And W Digital, LLC

Executive Producer Jerry Joyner at W And W Digital, LLC, discussed the announcement during a live broadcast from Dallas, Texas on Tuesday, April 27th, 4:20 pm 2021 from their headquarters in Deep Ellum. “The Luck Summit is just what the doctor ordered in many ways, exclaimed Joyner. I think most Texans believe that our lone star state will be the last to pass the legalization for the use of recreational cannabis, but with efforts like Willie Nelson and his team at the Luck Summit, paired with the High Holidays, I believe Texans will get the cannabis relief they need sooner than later. For me, I partake when I can, but there are hundreds of thousands of people that could be managing pain and health issues with cannabis on a daily basis if legalization legislation can be passed down in Austin. It’s a hell of a lot better than opioids.”, added Joyner. The multi-day virtual summit, seeks to destigmatize, educate, and promote cannabis culture in an informative and entertaining way. During the summit, Luck Presents and cannabis advocates will discuss the plant from a political, ethics, economic, wellness, community, industry and science point of view. Planting the Seed is the marque event of Luck’s “High Holidays”, a 9 day celebration of the cannabis plant and it’s many benefits which began on 4/20 and ends on Willie’s birthday, 4/29. Additionally, Luck Presents is petitioning the Biden Administration and Congress to make 4/20 to 4/29 the “High Holidays” in honor of the cannabis industry and to celebrate Willie’s birthday. “If you haven’t seen Willie Nelson’s letter to President Joe Biden petitioning for the High Holidays, you should and here it is”, added Joyner. The on-line petition can be found here. Weed And Whiskey News is a content distribution studio focusing on Cannabis, Whiskey, Music and the culture within. Israeli AgTech genetics companies and academic researchers team up to apply the latest genomic selection algorithms to boost farming performance of freshwater shrimp in Asia

NRGene

Enzootic Genetics & Innovation, NRGene and Ben-Gurion University of the Negev will create a new technological consortium to apply the latest genomic selection technologies developed by NRGene for the enhancement of Enzootic’s freshwater shrimp breeding program and performance of its proprietary all-female populations. Enzootic Genetics & Innovation, an animal biotechnology and genetics company leading the all-female freshwater shrimp revolution, and NRGene (TASE: NRGN), an AI based genomic company operating in the agricultural industry, have signed a new technological collaboration agreement. Based on their successful cooperation from 2018 of sequencing and assembling the world’s first high-quality genome of freshwater shrimp M. rosenbergii, the two tech companies, together with researchers from the Life Sciences Department of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, and the support of the Israel Innovation Authority, will harness NRGene’s novel quantitative genomics breeding tools and algorithms to Enzootic’s genetic selection program. The objective of this collaboration is the selection of superior breeding genetics that will eventually translate into an improvement in yield and revenues for farmers using Enzootic’s all-female freshwater shrimp. “Enzootic assimilates the latest genomic big data tools to accelerate our genetic selection program. Our previous successful collaboration with NRGene, and their pioneering genomic tools, paved the way for this milestone collaboration,” said Managing Director of Enzootic Genetics & Innovation Mr. Amit Hochman. “The continual performance improvement of our all-female population is attributed to data-driven parent populations selection, through Enzootic’s hatcheries in Asia and ultimately the yields of farmers that use this proprietary mono-sex farming strategy.” “Our new collaboration with Enzootic, alongside our past success, is part of NRGene’s strategy to support and enhance breeding of highly important aquaculture species, such as shrimp.” said Dr. Gil Ronen, NRGene’s CEO. “We continuously develop powerful big data analysis tools that navigate genetic selection programs like the one implemented in freshwater shrimp by Enzootic.” “This collaboration, together with academic researchers from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, creates a unique opportunity to align population quantitative genomic data, with our basic science transcriptomic and metabolic libraries, investigated and studied by our group” said crustacean endocrinologist Prof. Amir Sagi of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. “This alignment may shed new light on the understanding and regulation of key physiological processes in M. rosenbergii ”. Sixty-Nine BIPOC-Owned Small Businesses In Washington To Receive Free Computer Equipment and Internet Services or Advertising from Comcast RISE

Comcast Washington

Comcast today announced it will award technology, and, or marketing resources to 69 Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC)-owned small businesses statewide as a part of the company’s latest round of grants from its Comcast RISE program. These recipients are part of roughly 2,500 entrepreneurs nationwide who have been selected as awardees since the program’s inception in November, including approximately 100 in Washington state. According to a National Bureau of Economic Research study, the number of Black business owners plummeted last year from 1.1 million to 640,000 in four months — a 41% loss. Other communities of color also experienced deep losses, including immigrant (a 36 percent drop), Latinx (32 percent), and Asian (26 percent) business owners. Comcast RISE was formed in 2020 to give BIPOC-owned small businesses the tools needed to not just survive, but thrive. The program provides grants to Black and BIPOC-owned small businesses nationwide, which includes Hispanic and Asian American-owned businesses, among others. Comcast also announced a goal to support 13,000 small businesses by 2022 through the program with a TV campaign, production of a TV commercial or consulting services from Effectv; or computer equipment, internet, voice or cybersecurity from Comcast Business; or a monetary grant. “Our small businesses are incredibly resilient, and have adapted to constant change over the past year. Seattle is a technology hub, however, we quickly realized that some small businesses—many of which are owned by Black, Indigenous and other people of color—did not have the same level of technological infrastructure that other businesses had when it was time to quickly pivot to an online based business model” said Pamela Banks, Interim Director of the Seattle Office of Economic Development, and Director of Recovery and Equitable Investments. “Comcast has been a critical partner for OED, as we have worked together to respond to the digital divide that is impacting our small businesses owned by people of color, immigrants, and refugees. These grants will be a game changer, as we move forward in a world so heavily reliant on technology and marketing capabilities.” Through Comcast RISE, the company creates sustainable impact and meaningful support for communities that have been hit hardest by the global pandemic and the BIPOC-owned small businesses that shape them. More BIPOC-owned small businesses throughout Washington are encourage d to apply now and take advantage of this opportunity Eligible businesses can apply directly online at www.comcastrise.com/apply/. Eligible businesses can apply for the following: Marketing Services: The following services from Effectv, the advertising sales division of Comcast Cable, and its creative agency, Mnemonic, are designed to help recipients with their marketing and media campaigns, including: Media: A linear TV media campaign to run over a 90-day period. (Taxes and other fees may still apply for tech makeover services.) Monetary Grants: The Comcast RISE Investment Fund will provide $5 million in grants to 500 BIPOC-owned small businesses in five cities: Philadelphia/Chester, Houston, Atlanta, Chicago and Detroit. Comcast plans to expand that monetary support to other cities across the country over the next year. “Congratulations to all of the grant recipients across our state today. Comcast Business is dedicated to lifting up businesses and providing a human touch that offers them the support they need, and we are truly proud to be able to support these owners through Comcast RISE,” said Robert Brenner, VP of Comcast Business in Washington. “We have now been able to offer 100 grants to businesses across our state since we launched this program in November, and we’ve seen firsthand how marketing and technology resources can have a true impact on owners and help them bounce forward into 2021.” Quotes from Comcast RISE Winners Across the Puget Sound Region “It was a pleasant surprise to be chosen as one of the first Comcast RISE winners in Washington! Comcast gave Your Money Matters Mentoring technology and equipment that will be a tremendous help for our organization. Being a nonprofit mentorship program for youth this support helped us tremendously as we have had to go digital to continue to provide our financial training programs. The work we do in the community is about empowering youth, particularly young people from communities of color, by helping them understand how to set themselves up for a better financial future. Change can’t come for our underserved youth and for minority-owned businesses without people and organizations in our community coming together to support one another. It is great to see a big public company like Comcast helping in this effort, and we are grateful for their support.” – Clinton Taylor, Founder and Executive Director of Your Money Matter Mentoring in Auburn “When COVID-19 hit, I found myself starting over. I made the tough decision to close a consulting business I had led for 20 years. But challenges like this bring new beginnings, and I set out to create a new business over the last year that combines my Latinx roots and my passion for creating something that our community loves. I'm honored to share Komadre Kombucha with friends and neighbors in Tacoma. It has been a fantastic journey, and community partnerships and support from organizations like Comcast have helped turn this dream into a reality. We are excited to open our doors this year, and I know that the technology resources from Comcast will help us serve the community con sabor (with flavor).” – Julie Davidson, Owner-Operator of Komadre Kombucha in Tacoma “As a Black-owned business, we are honored to be selected by Comcast to receive this award. We plan to use this award to continue providing world-class service at our client-focused firm.” –KD Hall, the CEO and Principal Consultant at KD Hall Communications in Federal Way. “COVID continues to make it difficult for our staff to meet with each other and clients in-person, so technology is essential to help us get work our done and keep everyone collaborating from afar. “We greatly value our clients and the technology makeover from the Comcast Rise program will help us be able to communicate with them and each other better than ever. And that’s good for business.” – Janelle Bailey, owner of Washington Injury Law in Seattle. "Blessings is so grateful to be a recipient of the Comcast Business Grant! This grant provided exactly what Blessings needed and just in the nick of time!" – Delphia Brewton, Blessings From My Heart to your Table in Tukwila Comcast RISE also invests in ongoing mentorship and resources to help businesses succeed over the long-term. The program has partnered with Ureeka, an online platform for entrepreneurs, to provide grant recipients with business coaching to help build skills in company foundation, growing customers and financial stability. All Comcast RISE recipients will also have a specialized online networking community within Ureeka with access to educational resources, sources of capital, and vetted experts such as U.S. Black Chambers, National Asian Pacific Islander Chamber of Commerce & Entrepreneurship, U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Association for Enterprise Opportunity, Walker’s Legacy and Operation Hope. A key part of Comcast RISE is ensuring business sustainability. As such, Comcast has already invested more than $2 million in more than 20 community-based organizations and diverse chambers of commerce to provide additional support to BIPOC-owned small businesses. Teaching Doctors Nationwide How to Recognize and Differentiate Between Lyme Disease, COVID-19 and the Flu in Quidel-Hosted May 5 Webinar

Quidel Corporation

With Lyme disease season emerging and the COVID-19 pandemic still with us, an important webinar designed to help physicians differentiate between the two (as well as the flu) so as to provide timely diagnosis and treatment for their patients will be held on Wednesday, May 5. The webinar is the latest in an ongoing series sponsored by Quidel, the California-based diagnostic health care manufacturer known for successfully developing rapid diagnostic health solutions. Titled "Solve the Great Imitators: Is it COVID-19, Tick-Borne Disease or the Flu?," the webinar will be conducted by Sean McCloy,* M.D., M.P.H., M.A., national thought leader and medical director at the Integrative Health Center of Maine in Portland where he practices family medicine with an expertise in Lyme disease. The free educational program, being held in collaboration with the Global Lyme Alliance, will take place at noon EDT. Registration is available at Quidel x GLA Lyme Webinar Registration. “Lyme disease is often misdiagnosed because its symptoms often mimic other conditions like the flu and many others. As we enter peak tick season, it is important to remind health care providers and others about the importance of screening their patients for Lyme disease,” says Sara Tyghter, director of education and outreach at Global Lyme Alliance. “The trio of acute COVID-19 infection, tick-borne disease and influenza infection all have very similar presentations and share the common symptoms of fever/chills, fatigue, muscle aches and headaches,” says Dr. McCloy. “That makes it both challenging and critical for health care professionals to properly distinguish one from the other so that they can correctly treat their patients for the corresponding ailment. During the webinar, we’ll discuss the often subtle differences in how these illnesses affect patients and will review diagnostic options that will help physicians make point-of-care decisions so that their patients can get timely treatment and feel better quickly.” As the weather heats up during spring and summer, McCloy says that it is particularly important to test for Lyme disease, which afflicts as many as 400,000 Americans each year and can lead to a number of serious life-threatening problems if not caught early. “Fortunately, new tools are now available to make it easier to test for Lyme disease quickly and accurately,” he says. “The best tool I have found and one which has revolutionized the speed and accuracy for diagnosing Lyme disease is the Sofia® 2 Lyme FIA test by Quidel.” The Sofia 2 Lyme test provides the patient and physician with indicative results within 15 minutes, as opposed to days, which has historically been the norm. Performed in the privacy of a doctor’s office or local clinic, it is also the only test that can get results from a simple finger prick of blood. “Not having to wait days for test results allows clinicians to more rapidly treat those patients with positive results while more quickly pursuing other diagnosis and treatment for those who test negative,” says McCloy. Among those expected to attend the free May 5 webinar are physicians; allied health professionals; health researchers; and representatives of physician offices, laboratories, urgent care centers and others interested in the subject. * Dr. McCloy receives an honorarium for conducting the webinar sponsored by Quidel. About Quidel Corporation Quidel Corporation (Nasdaq: QDEL) is a leading manufacturer of diagnostic solutions at the point of care, delivering a continuum of rapid testing technologies that further improve the quality of health care throughout the globe. Centre for Neuro Skills and University of Texas Medical Branch Study Indicates That Chronic Traumatic Brain Injury Patients Are Not Absorbing Needed Nutrients

Centre for Neuro Skills

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, more than 2.5 million Americans suffer traumatic brain injuries (TBI) each year. A new and recent study, supported by the Centre of Neuro Skills in conjunction with the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, found abnormal reactions between the brain and gastrointestinal tract (gut-brain axis) in moderate to severe chronic TBI patients. The result is that these patients may not be absorbing nutrients properly and treatments need to be developed to address these issues. The study was conducted at the University of Texas Medical Branch in the Department of Neurology in Galveston, Texas (under the supervision of Dr. Brent Masel) and the Centre of Neuro Skills in Bakersfield, California (under the supervision of Dr. Mark Ashley). Study Summary: The controlled study followed 10 TBI patients in Galveston, where Dr. Masel is a clinical professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch in the Department of Neurology. Dr. Masel is also the vice president of Medical Services at the Centre for Neuro Skills. Researchers had the patients fast, get their blood drawn, eat a specific meal and get their blood drawn again. TBI patients had low baseline levels of essential amino acids. Even after eating a meal, their levels remained lower than the non-injured study participants. Researchers determined that TBI patients weren’t absorbing essential amino acids. Dr. Masel and his colleagues made this determination and then wondered if it was simply the local diet or geographical location (lifestyle/exercise, stress, etc). He called Dr. Mark Ashley and suggested an identical study at the Centre for Neuro Skills in Bakersfield, California. The results were the same, so the conclusion was that this issue wasn’t related to diet, location or lifestyle. Dr. Masel’s observation: “The commonality is TBI. Essential amino acids are not being absorbed from the gut, and those molecules are critical to TBI recovery. This is amazing to me: maybe these patients are starving. I figured there must be a connection between the gut-brain axis.” After administering the fasting/eating/blood draw protocol, they added stool sample analysis. The study then focused on the microbiome and its relation to bacteria in the gut. The gut can say “OK” to a healthy system and absorb essential amino acids or can “gobble up” the same molecules depriving the human of using these critical nutrition components. That’s what was found in the fecal matter. Essential amino acids were missing; the commonality in both the Texas and California groups was TBI. This may affect the ability of patients to fully recover. In CNS’ “whole person” approach, it could affect the quality of functionality/return to normalcy. Point of distinction here – with CNS’ dedicated research team, these discoveries/research/scientists and their publications can advance treatment and expand understanding of the depth of TBI’s damage. The study’s distinction is that the two groups, thousands of miles apart, produced the same outcome and the same deficit of non-absorption. The CNS patient study group was part of CNS’ Long Term Care program, so the organization will be able to study them now and in the future. Observations: “Clearly there are abnormalities in the microbiome of the gut in TBI patients,” commented Dr. Masel. “Maybe this is a piece of the puzzle that can solve the mystery of TBI. It’s one puzzle piece at a time. Presently, the majority of what we do is treat the symptoms of TBI, as opposed to the underlying causes of those symptoms, which would be far more effective. Perhaps by correcting the malabsorption of the essential amino acids, we can advance the recovery from TBIs. We will be studying how altering the diet in these individuals may change their amino acid absorption. Our hope is that this will assist in identifying long-term risks and treatments.” Comments CNS’ Dr. Ashley, “It’s gratifying to be part of a study that in the end may help identify keys that allow us to better treat patients with TBI for the long haul. With CNS’ dedicated research team and these discoveries, we hopefully can advance treatment and expand our understanding of the depth of TBI’s damage. We look forward to the next steps.” This study was funded by the Moody Endowment (funding M.S.M.) and conducted with the support of TideWay, part of the Transitional Learning Center (Galveston, TX) and the Centre for Neuro Skills (Bakersfield, CA). The study took place with 8 patients in Galveston and 12 patients in California. The link to the full study is here.
