NAVEX 2024 Global Incident Management Benchmark Study Reveals Significant Third-Party Reporting to Companies

NAVEX Global

NAVEX, the global leader in integrated risk and compliance management software, has released its 2024 Whistleblowing & Incident Management Benchmark Report. The annual benchmark report offers valuable insights into workplace culture, analyzing trends from 1.86 million global reports spanning thousands of organizations that together employ more than 50 million employees. Amid a record number of tips to the SEC and a burgeoning DOJ whistleblowing program, NAVEX’s comprehensive analysis sheds a critical light on the state of workplace environments worldwide, guiding organizations toward program improvement. "NAVEX remains the gold standard in risk and compliance data analytics, continually innovating our benchmarks to enhance corporate compliance programs and offer business leaders insights into the trending risk areas for their organizations," says NAVEX Chief Risk and Compliance Officer Carrie Penman. "This year's report introduces crucial third-party reporting insights, highlighting an organization’s need to adopt internal and external reporting avenues to bolster integrity, foster accountability and equip the organization to tackle emerging challenges effectively.” This year’s analysis of the data revealed several key themes and notable findings, including: Report volume and case substantiation reach milestones. Internal reporting programs saw a record level of use as measured by NAVEX’s Reports per 100 Employees metric. In addition, the Substantiation Rate metric reached an all-time high, meaning more reports were received and more were found to be true. Report volume, and the substantiation rates of the reports received, are two of the most highly watched metrics in the annual NAVEX publication. To see both reach the highest levels ever is good news. For those with trusted and effective internal reporting programs, this added up to greater visibility into the trends of risk, ethics and culture playing out in their organizations’ operations – real-time intelligence to inform business decision-making. In 2023, organizations received a median 1.57 Reports per 100 Employees across their internal reporting systems, exceeding the previous record of 1.47 set in 2022. More organizations (23%) received five or more Reports per 100 Employees, making this population the largest in the NAVEX data set. And while year-over-year values fluctuated, every size of organization – from the smallest companies to enterprises with over 100,000 employees – has seen report volumes rise comparing 2021 and 2023. At 45%, the overall median share of substantiated or founded reports in 2023 reached an 11-year high. Third parties more likely to report business integrity and financial misconduct issues. In a first for this report, NAVEX analyzed its database by both employees and third-party reporters. Its analysis shows these two groups are distinct across several metrics, highlighting the insight organizations see by promoting their reporting programs internally and externally. Third parties as a group delivered a far greater median share of reports related to Business Integrity matters than employees in 2023 (50% versus 17%). Encompassing topics like conflicts of interest, vendor issues, fraud, global trade and human rights, this category of issues can manifest in various elements of a supply chain. Third-party reporters also showed twice the median share of Accounting, Auditing & Financial Reporting reports as employees in 2023 (10% versus 4.5%). Story emerging on accounting-related reporting – internally and externally. Accounting-related reports -- while lower in overall percentage of reports received internally by organizations at a median of 4.3.% in 2023 -- often receive an outsized share of attention due to potential for regulatory action and the well-publicized bounty program offered by the SEC and its Office of the Whistleblower. The SEC's program is witnessing unprecedented growth in tips and generously rewarding valuable information. Now, the U.S. Department of Justice is launching a similar initiative. Specifically, reports related to Accounting, Auditing, and Financial reporting: Showed the longest time between when an incident was observed and when it was reported to the organization By a large margin, were least likely to be reported anonymously Comprised an outsized share of cases for organizations that receive very few Reports per 100 Employees – meaning while these organizations received well below the benchmark number of reports, they had a much more significant percentage of accounting-related reports Experienced the longest time to investigate and close the case Had among the highest median Substantiation Rates, at 50% Were most likely to cause an employment separation event as a result of a substantiated case Accounted for twice as many of the reports submitted by third parties than those submitted by employees Small increase in report volume shows big payoff in healthy report mix. A diverse array of topics, inquiries, and allegations in internal reporting indicates a robust program. NAVEX’s findings reveal that even minor efforts to promote internal reporting significantly improve the mix of report types received. For instance, in organizations with the lowest report volume, only 8.7% of reports pertain to HR, Diversity, and Workplace Respect. However, in the next tier, this proportion jumps to 36.3%. This trend persists across different report volumes, emphasizing the importance of fostering a reporting culture. A varied mix of report types signifies trust in internal reporting to address a broad spectrum of issues. Even a slight increase from minimal reporting yields a more comprehensive and insightful flow of reports. "With NAVEX's integrated data platform, companies gain unparalleled risk signal data that empowers them to foster healthier workplace cultures, helping them achieve outcomes that matter most,” explains NAVEX Chief Product Officer A.G. Lambert. "Data isn't just numbers; it's the compass guiding organizations toward success and ensuring they stay ahead in the ever-evolving landscape of risk and compliance." Additional notable findings include: Workplace behaviors and discord were clearly visible in the data as more organizations return to office environments. As is always the case in these reports, workplace behaviors and other human resources related matters are by far the highest percentage of reports received by organizations. Workplace Civility matters continued to increase in prominence in 2023, representing a median of 18% of reports and the highest median reporting rate in 2023. This was followed by Discrimination, at a median 12%, Harassment, at a median 7.1%, then Retaliation at a median of 2.0%. The HR, Diversity and Workplace Respect category overall has seen a multi-year increase in its median share of all reports (from 50% in 2021 to 55% in 2023). These figures underscore the growing importance of fostering a respectful and inclusive work environment. Highlighting the seriousness with which organizations are taking reports received, more substantiated reports (18%) resulted in separation from employment in 2023, up significantly from 14% in 2022 and 12% in 2021. The share of reports resulting in no action – effectively the opposite end of the outcome spectrum – fell from 17% in 2022 to 14% in 2023. Nearly nine out of 10 reports of Imminent Threat to a Person, Animals or Property were substantiated in 2023 highlighting the importance that reporters possess the training, knowledge, tools and trust that promote rapid reporting of dangerous issues. This need is made even greater by a new California workplace violence prevention law expected to take effect this year that includes requirements for reporting, incident management and training around this issue. An Inherited Condition Could be the Cause of Your Early Heart Disease or Stroke, But Your Doctor is Probably Not Testing for It

YourUpdateTV

A video accompanying this announcement is available at: https://youtu.be/Y_mu9ZpIO88 Heart disease is still the single biggest threat to American health today. Family Heart Foundation research shows that less than 5% of Americans are being screened for the most common, life-threatening genetic condition that causes early strokes and heart attacks – elevated Lipoprotein(a) or Lp(a) for short. Elevated lipoprotein(a) is the most common genetic cause of early heart disease and stroke. One in 5 people worldwide have inherited high Lp(a), and most don’t know it. You inherit your Lp(a) level from your parents. Because elevated Lp(a) isn’t screened for, the first sign of this condition may be a stroke or a heart attack. Elevated levels of Lp(a) increases the risk of blood clotting and plaque buildup inside the blood vessels, which can block the flow of blood and oxygen to your heart and brain. Compared to the general population, people with elevated Lp(a) have 2-3 times the risk for a heart attack and stroke at a young age. The higher your Lp(a), the higher your risk. Lp(a) is not measured in the standard cholesterol panel. It’s important to understand if you have elevated Lp(a). Multiple therapies are in development but in the meantime, there are things you can do to manage your other cardiovascular risk factors, such as keeping your LDL cholesterol levels very low. The Family Heart Foundation can help you find a healthcare provider near you and connect you to others living with elevated Lp(a). The Family Heart Foundation is the only patient-centered, research and advocacy organization focused on addressing the lack of screening and care for people born and living with this common life-threatening condition. On March 20 th a nationwide media tour was conducted featuring Dr. Amit Khera, Professor and Director of Preventive Cardiology UT Southwestern Medical Center and Misty Votaw. Topics they discussed included: Who should have their Lp(a) measured and when. Misty’s story and how the Family Heart Foundation provided resources. If you have elevated Lp(a), what can you do to reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke. What the Family Heart Foundation is doing to address gaps in care for 60 million Americans at risk. For more information and to find out if you have elevated Lp(a), contact the Family Heart Foundation’s Care Navigation team at FindLpa.org. YourFMO Reaches a Donation Milestone: Equivalent of 10 Million Meals Donated to Feeding America®

YourFMO

YourFMO, a national, non-governmental, independent marketing organization that provides agents with valuable resources they need to help clients decide on Medicare options, announced that it has reached a major milestone in its partnership with Feeding America ®: YourFMO has donated in excess of 10 million meals since 2019. Since starting its partnership with Feeding America, YourFMO has donated the equivalent of 10 meals* for every effective insurance enrollment that agents submit through the YourFMO Enrollment Center. “When we started our partnership with Feeding America, the idea of donating the equivalent of 1 million meals seemed like an ambitious goal,” said Matthew Graham, senior vice president and YourFMO program leader. “The independent agents who embrace our enrollment center in Q4 of 2023 fueled us to surpass this 10-million-meal milestone.” YourFMO and Feeding America share a common goal to support America’s senior population. According to Feeding America, 5.5 million seniors (1 in 14 or 7.1%), age 60 and older, were food insecure in 2021. Every state is home to seniors and older adults who experience food insecurity. Feeding America is committed to an America where no one is hungry. The organization partners with people experiencing food insecurity, policymakers, organizations and supporters, united with them in a movement to end hunger. “We are so grateful for partners like YourFMO, whose commitment to Feeding America has resulted in a remarkable milestone of 10 million meals donated since 2019,” said Lauren Biedron, Feeding America’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Partnerships. “Their dedication has had a far-reaching impact on local food banks and their surrounding communities in addressing hunger, including the critical issue of senior hunger.” YourFMO’s closest business partners appreciate the opportunity to support Feeding America when they use the enrollment center. “Many of the companies in the AmeriLife portfolio rely on YourFMO’s platform to efficiently process Medicare enrollments,” said Scotty Elliott, Chief Distribution Officer of Health at AmeriLife. “The ability to also play a role in helping to feed seniors who are battling food insecurities is a benefit that can’t be overstated.” YourFMO’s efforts to support Feeding America have also helped inspire AmeriLife’s corporate giving efforts. During last year’s Valspar Championship, AmeriLife – in partnership with local affiliate Feeding Tampa Bay – sponsored a food donation drive at the golf tournament. Fans eagerly responded by donating 5,000 pounds of shelf-stable food items, and the two partners look forward to hosting this food drive activation once again during the final round of the 2024 Valspar Championship on Sunday, March 24. “YourFMO helped introduce us to the worthwhile efforts of Feeding America,” said Elliott. “We’re proud to hold another donation drive at this year’s tournament and help those in our community who are facing hunger.” YourFMO sees its partnership with Feeding America as an ongoing commitment. “I know I can speak for the entire YourFMO team in saying we’re incredibly grateful for the support from our independent agents who helped us reach 10 million donated meals,” added Graham. “I’m excited to see how many more meals we can donate and how many neighbors in need we can support in 2024 and in years to come.” Individuals who want to support YourFMO’s efforts can visit its Team Feed Corporate donation page to make a financial contribution. *$1 helps provide at least 10 meals ### About YourFMO YourFMO is a national non-government, independent marketing organization that is a one-stop shop for independent agents to grow their business. ASSOCIATION OF PICKLEBALL PLAYERS, UTR SPORTS LAUNCH FUNDRAISING PROGRAM TO SUPPORT AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY THROUGH PICKLEBALL

AOPP

The Association of Pickleball Players (APP), the American Cancer Society and UTR Sports are teaming up to fight cancer through Doubles Dink for Cancer, a first-of-its-kind community-based fundraising program. The year-round program is designed to unite communities around the beloved sport of pickleball and in support of a single mission: to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. With nearly 50 million adult Americans playing pickleball, Doubles Dink for Cancer invites players of all levels to play pickleball or organize an event to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer and raise funds to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families. Hosted on UTR Sports’ innovative software, these volunteer-led, round robin doubles tournaments can happen anytime, anywhere—from a local pickleball or tennis club, to community courts or even homemade, temporary courts lined with chalk. Events are designed to be fun and open to everyone, including the most experienced pickleball players and people picking up a paddle for the first time. “Pickleball offers physical, social and emotional benefits—all important to a battle against cancer. Doubles Dink for Cancer builds on this as a fun way to get moving, raise awareness and leverage the pickleball community for good,” said APP Founder Ken Herrmann. “With the majority of people having a personal connection to cancer, we hope you join us in rallying behind the American Cancer Society to bring renewed hope for patients and their families on a national scale.” Doubles Dink for Cancer will also showcase how pickleball can play a part in cancer avoidance, as people maintain an active and healthy lifestyle—an important factor in reducing cancer risk. Cancer can impact anyone at any age and finding cancer early increases survival rates. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 1.9 million people are expected to be diagnosed with cancer this year. At present, one in two men and one in three women in the United States will receive a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. Doubles Dink for Cancer will donate 70 percent of proceeds from registration fees to further the American Cancer Society’s mission through funding cancer research discoveries, enhancing direct patient support in 20,000 communities across the country and through advocating for policies that enhance access to cancer care. “We’re excited to work with the Association of Pickleball Players to broaden our reach and amplify the message that physical activity, like playing pickleball, can help prevent cancer,” said Dr. Arif Kamal, chief patient officer at the American Cancer Society. “Uniting this community around reducing cancer risks and supporting our mission is invaluable and will help us impact more lives.” Doubles Dink for Cancer is now live in Florida, providing a pilot launch in one of the strongest pickleball communities in the world before its national roll out in Summer 2024. The Miami-Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area represents the single largest concentration of pickleball players in Florida, with 20 percent of the state’s pickleball-playing population residing in the area. According to the APP’s 2023 player participation research data, the Miami-Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area is the fourth largest pickleball market in the nation, with 3.1 percent of their population having played the sport at least once in the past twelve months. Each Doubles Dink for Cancer event, regardless of tournament size, will be supported with the following signature elements: An event page on UTR Sports where organizers can invite friends, manage registration and communicate with players Resources for beginner event organizers to easily manage the tournament, including a toolkit with sample schedules, scoresheets, brackets, volunteer needs and more For more experienced organizers, access to UTR Sports technology to run the event using its tournament management software Branded T-shirts for event participants “We are excited and honored to be partners on this great initiative,” said Mark Leschly, UTR Sports Chairman and CEO. “Cancer impacts so many Americans, and the opportunity to support the battle while playing the great sport of pickleball is a win for everyone. We are proud to host these events on UTR Sports and look forward to what we can accomplish together.” Community members interested in planning a local event or serving as a Doubles Dink for Cancer ambassador can access resources and additional information at theapp.global/doublesdinkforcancer. Each player will pay a registration fee to participate, as they do for any local tournament or court rental, with 70 percent of proceeds supporting the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving cancer research and commitment to advancing health equity through essential programs and services. In addition to nationwide community events, Doubles Dink for Cancer will have a strong presence at all APP Tour events. Local cancer survivors, caregivers, advocates and their families will be recognized on Championship Court for as living proof of the American Cancer Society’s mission. Report Reveals Alarming Number of Infants & Toddlers Experiencing Homelessness in the U.S.

SchoolHouse Connection

Washington, DC, March 20, 2024 | Today, national non-profit SchoolHouse Connection releases "Infant and Toddler Homelessness Across 50 States: 2021-2022," the most comprehensive analysis to date of homelessness among the nation's youngest children. This report offers the first-ever state-by-state collection of data on infant and toddler homelessness and provides detailed recommendations for policymakers and communities alike. “For the first time, we are able to shine a light on the extent of homelessness among infants and toddlers in all 50 states, as well as the gaps in their access to early childhood development programs," said Barbara Duffield, Executive Director of SchoolHouse Connection. "We urge practitioners and policymakers alike to dig into these data and take action, so that we can prevent long-term harm and interrupt cycles of homelessness that may start at the very beginning of life.” Drawing on an extensive analysis of federal and other available data, the report estimates that nearly 365,000 infants and toddlers experienced homelessness during the 2021-2022 program year across the United States. Alarmingly, the report found that only 11% of these children were enrolled in early childhood development programs, with enrollment rates varying significantly by state. "Early childhood development programs offer a wide range of support for infants, toddlers, and families who are homeless, from essential supplies like diapers and hygiene products, to services that counter the impact of homelessness on child development," said Erin Patterson, Director of Education Initiatives of SchoolHouse Connection. "These programs also facilitate vital connections to both short- and long-term housing solutions. We must redouble our efforts to ensure that every expectant parent, infant, and toddler experiencing homelessness receives access to these essential services." The report concludes with a call to action, offering targeted recommendations for state and federal policymakers to increase the identification of homeless families with infants and toddlers and to improve their access to critical early childhood development services and housing supports. The report also includes practical strategies for early childhood development programs that can be implemented immediately. A link to the report, including methodology, can be found here.
