Today, Checkr, a leading HR technology company, shared its innovative and successful approach to attracting and retaining talent. In the past six months, Checkr experienced an impressive uptick in employee learning and engagement after launching Learn In, a pioneering platform that helps companies establish their own Talent Academies.

Dedicated to building a fairer future, Checkr's solution offers a faster—and more fair—way to screen job seekers. The mission of fairness extends to providing its 1,300+ employees with all the tools and resources to perform their job well and continually grow. All of this was done with the goal of becoming one of the best places to work, and in March, Checkr was awarded a coveted spot on Forbes America’s Best Startup Employers List.

Checkr leads its sector in a range of benefits, especially when it comes to learning: every employee receives a generous annual stipend to spend on professional development. However, despite great educational benefits, leadership saw low engagement numbers and poor feedback on the process and options since the benefits program was initially launched in 2019.

“Five months after the launch of Learn In, we’ve already hit 20% utilization within the entire company,” said Jamal Smith, a Senior Learning and Development Specialist at Checkr, “The annual goal is 25%, so in five months, we’ve almost met our goal. Learn In makes it easy for employees to access professional development funds, and this really lets us blow our goals out of the water.”

With Learn In, Checkr employees no longer need to pay out-of-pocket and claim through their expense system. Every employee receives a virtual spending card that they can put towards 1,000+ vetted, long-form learning programs listed within a curated marketplace. In order for funds to unlock on the virtual cards, employees simply request approval from managers and admins.

“Looking at our engagement scores, I firmly believe that since launching Learn In, people are confident that they have access to tools and resources to help them do their job well,” said Smith.

With high utilization, Michelle Vock Laboy, VP of Customer Success at Learn In, shared that Checkr surpassed its 2021 education spend just three months after launching Learn In. “Following the current trend,” said Laboy, “Checkr is forecasted to increase education spending and engagement eight times over.”

“At the end of the day, Learn In is enabling learning outcomes like career growth, retention, and internal mobility. It’s been powerful to watch how many Checkr employees have talent programs through Learn In and are building up-to-date skills that they can apply in their professional career.”
