Damon Burton, president of Utah search engine optimization agency SEO National, knows something about need. He grew up in Davis County, Utah, in a family that struggled to make ends meet. They moved often, shuffling Damon and his six younger siblings between small apartments, basements of friends, relatives’ homes, and trailer parks. With the help of his wife, Aleah, Damon is organizing a Christmas charity event to help youth in need. Sprinkles of Joy is scheduled for December 2 and will provide gifts for up to 50 Davis County families.

Damon is no stranger to charitable giving. In 2016, Burton paid off the school lunch debt of nearly 300 Davis County families (for a total of more than 5,700 meals). The idea of children not being able to have a meal pulled at Damon’s heartstrings, as he had been the recipient of free-and-reduced lunch in his school years.

“There were so many ups and downs in my youth, but meals at school were an important ‘steady,’” said Damon. “No matter where I was living, or what school I had just transferred into, I could count on breakfast and lunch every weekday. It meant a lot to me to relieve families in Davis County of the burden of school lunch debt.”

Damon has also provided Christmas gifts for needy Davis County families over the years, but this year, with the help of his wife, Aleah, he’ll play Santa on a grand scale by teaming up with One Can Make a Change for a charitable event dubbed “Sprinkles of Joy.”

“We wanted to do something as a couple and with our three children to make a positive impact in Davis County,” said Aleah, who has helped organize the charitable event through the Utah-based One Can Make a Change 501c3. Aleah secured a party venue for December 2 and is currently taking applications from families in need of a Christmas gift for their children. The Sprinkles of Joy event will also support small businesses by including Christmas cookies from online store Chocolate Shipped Cookies, a new project of local Cutler’s Cookies in Layton, a visit from Santa Claus, and gifts for 50 families, all made possible by the Burton family.

With two disabled siblings, including a sister with spina bifida, water on her brain, and a hole in her back, like Damon, Aleah’s upbringing gave her compassion for people in need.

“I remember sitting on Santa’s lap at a local Christmas light show in Ogden, Utah and asking Santa to help my sister walk,” said Aleah. “I really wanted that for my sister.”

She and her children discovered a giving opportunity when they visited Aleah’s ailing father at a veteran’s care center during the holidays of 2021. They pulled names off of a Christmas giving tree and returned with presents for youth in need. After her father passed away, Aleah wanted to expand that tradition of gift giving.

“Damon and I and our children wanted to support a charitable event in memory of my dad and sister, as well as the programs that helped Damon in his childhood years. It’s rewarding to give back, and to teach the rewards of giving to our kids,” said Aleah.

Families in need can register online for the Sprinkles of Joy event slated for December 2 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm in Layton, Utah. To learn more or to register, visiting www.LocalGiftGiving.com gives parents the opportunity to share basic information about family needs and preferences.
