Life Oscillates between failure and success. Nothing is constant and one person who has seen it all through ups and downs is KIIT Founder Dr Achyuta Samanta. His initial years were filled with struggle as he grew up in poverty. Dr Samanta was born in a nondescript village called Kalarabanka in Cuttack district of Odisha, India and came from a modest background. But the determination in him to succeed in life and help others rise from hopelessness and despondency through education is an example worth emulating for generations to come.

He refused to remain caged under circumstances and nurtured a fiery passion from his early days to offer quality education to the poor. Education, he said, is the only weapon to fight hunger and poverty, kindle hope and bring success in life. It was this untiring desire that led him to establish KIIT and KISS Deemed-to-be-Universities in Odisha’s Capital Bhubaneswar, India.

A three decades dream to transform KISS into world’s largest university for indigenous students.

Dr Samanta set on a course from the dusty lanes of his village to redefine the education landscape in the State of Odisha and Eastern India. KIIT had a humble beginning. It started with a vocational institute offering ITI education to students. But the transformation was fast. In the next two decades, the vocational institute transformed into one of the top 20 universities in the country. It has become a knowledge hub. Dr Samanta was undeniably the first in Odisha to take a deep dive into the matrices of Odisha’s societal realities. He could realise that the indigenous people, who constitutes 28 per cent of the State’s population, could be empowered only through education. He began KISS in the early 1990s and made it into the largest university for indigenous students in the world. Dr Samanta was alive to the realities of the indigenous population three decades ago, a concern that the rest of the State is awakening to now.

Extraordinary qualities behind a modest persona

It was pure hard work and steadfast resolve combined with an incredible vision that defined the persona of Dr Samanta. Sauva, soft-spoken and shy of publicity, Dr Samanta, dressed in his quintessential bush-shirts, embodies an extraordinary personality behind a simple life. KIIT Deemed-to-be-University is synonymous with academic excellence. It is a knowledge destination for students from India and outside. The University has countless talents who not only are celebrated names in their respective domains, but they are also contributing to their nation’s growth as successful bureaucrats, entrepreneurs and start-up leaders. It has redefined professional education in the country and set benchmarks in teaching pedagogies and research outputs. The remarkable growth of the University is rooted in the principles espoused time and again by Dr Samanta. They are sustained focus on quality education and research with specific attention to universal access to education and equity. The academic programmes provide exposure to real field issues through a variety of academic activities at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels.

The KIIT ecosystem ensures that no student feels left out or disconnected and that the student makes the crucial transition toward university life. KIIT orientation programmes include workshops, social events, study groups and opportunities to get involved in campus life. Participating in these activities ensures a student makes a successful start to studying at KIIT. Most Schools have adopted the novel concept of ‘tutor mentorship programme’, attaching 10-15 students with experienced faculty who help, guide and nurtures them through regular interactive sessions. This initiative also helps the student resolve personal problems. Both the Central and the state governments have forged alliances with KIIT for consultancy services. Experts from KIIT are not only providing periodic investigation to NHAI project sites but are also offering state urban sanitation strategies, building and structural designs as well as heritage projects. Evidently so, KIIT has become one of the top destinations for recruiters to hunt for promising minds.
