Southend Barns, a premium luxury Sussex wedding venue located at the foothills of the rolling South Downs National Park, has revealed a newly extended range of superb styling options for couples planning their exchange of vows, civil ceremony or wedding.

While the venue features a restored and preserved series of heritage barns, including vaulted ceilings and original beams, it caters to modern, themed and seasonal weddings, with styling ranging from traditional wedding décor to ultra-contemporary monochrome colour schemes.

Trends in Bespoke UK Weddings and Styling

In recent years, weddings and civil ceremonies have become more tailored and personalised, with many couples looking to move outside of convention. That may include alternatives to the customary white wedding dress, opting for grazing tables rather than a wedding breakfast, or be reflected in how a couple dresses the setting for their ceremony.

A survey by Hitched, the wedding directory, found that in 2022:

  • The average couple spent £8,400 on their wedding venue, plus £70 per person for catering.
  • Barn and hotel weddings remain the most popular options, with 20% of all couples hosting their big day at a barn or farm.
  • 19% of couples looked for options that were sustainable or eco-friendly.

The appeal of a rustic countryside setting is undoubtedly a significant factor while building in elements of nature and sustainability so important to today’s newlyweds. Some of the most prevalent changes and predicted trends for weddings in 2024 relate directly to themes and styling.

Hitched also found that interest in retro-inspired weddings has grown 29%, jazz musicians and saxophonists are becoming more popular than the traditional harpist, and searches for rented items to use during a wedding, from dresses to décor, have risen 152%.

Changes to the Southend Barns Venue Style Guide

Southend Barns has met this evolution in the aspirations and priorities of wedding guests and planners head-on, offering solutions that transform the expansive venue into a luxurious, intimate ceremony space or that capture a theme, vibe or style down to the finest details.

The family-owned venue has showcased some of its revamped styling options, working with curated photographers, vendors and stylists, introducing a cool, pared-back, romantic black-and-white look accented by gold and deep, rich foliage.

This theme, called Magical Monochrome, is set to be in significant demand during the peak summer wedding season, using classic colours with a contemporary twist. Arched mirrors, glass features and black, sumptuous candles add those touches of polish and refinement, with themes used throughout the grounds.

While guests can select their preferred flowers and floral displays, the venue designers suggest using sustainable, living plants rather than cut flowers – linking to the trend for more environmentally conscious weddings with a low carbon footprint.

Using local plants through the venue's selected vendor, the showcase shoot juxtaposes large monstera leaves against delicate birds of paradise and ever-popular miniature succulents, gifted as wedding favours for a living reminder of a special day.
