You don’t have to decide between being a host or a guest, because you can be both at the same time. In the US, nearly one-in-four Airbnb Hosts were also guests on the platform, each Host earning almost $12,000 - between January 1 and June 30, 2022. Recently, Caroline Hutt, host of an eco-cabin in Ontario, Canada, conducted a satellite media tour to talk about this and her experience being an Airbnb Host.

There’s no surprise that the Airbnb Host community is passionate about travel. In fact, more than half of its current Host community began their journey with Airbnb traveling as a guest on the platform. And while they now spend their time dreaming up inspiring listing ideas, seeking out the hidden gems in their neighborhoods or doing the many other things involved to ensure their guests are living like locals – they too, need to scratch the travel itch sometimes.
Many hosts are seeing their homes as a way to make extra money while traveling, whether to cover some of their mortgage and bills or even fund a summer holiday abroad. In the US, nearly one-in-four Airbnb Hosts were also guests on the platform, typically earning more than $12,000 between January 1 and June 30, 2022.
According to a recent survey, over 60 percent of Hosts who said they list their primary home said one of the occasions in which they rented to guests was while traveling on vacation. That typical income means that Hosts can travel to destinations like Buenos Aires, Istanbul or Milan and still have earnings left to cover living expenses or save for next year’s trip.
Take it from eco-cabin Superhost Caroline. Caroline and her husband are avid travelers, and they started their journey on Airbnb by renovating and listing a campervan on their property – before branching out and building The Eco-Cabin Muskoka in Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada. The income from Hosting has funded their trips to Iceland, Bali, Lombok, Morocco, and a lot of US road trips. Since Caroline began Hosting her cabin in 2019, she has earned $39,593 which has allowed her to fuel her passion for travel while providing guests with a tranquil getaway in her off-grid cabin.
For anyone interested in hosting to supplement to fund their next trip away, prospective Hosts in the US can learn more about how much they could earn on Airbnb through the What’s My Place Worth tool. The interactive tool computes the estimated income based on geography, type of listing, and also uses prior Airbnb booking data in the area. For more information, visit Airbnb.com/host.
About Caroline Hutt:
Caroline is a nomadic and creative soul, who's great love of travel has led her on many adventures. She grew up in Northern Ontario, exploring vast forests and the great lakes. Her love of design and small spaces began in childhood, building forts in the cedar groves and styling her bedroom regularly. Her journey with Airbnb began when she decided to list a campervan on her property when she wasn't using it for road trips with her partner. After becoming a mother, Caroline wanted to create a more flexible work situation, and her Airbnb - Eco-Cabin Muskoka was born! She, along with her partner, designed and built the tiny cabin sustainably with the environment and travelers in mind. The two are now working on their next project, a vintage Airstream! Being an airbnb host has naturally combined her love of travel, design, sustainability and family. She now lives and works with her family on a small off-grid homestead in Muskoka, Ontario.
Airbnb was born in 2007 when two Hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home and has since grown to 4 million Hosts who have welcomed more than 1 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe. Every day, Hosts offer one-of-a-kind stays and unique Experiences that make it possible for guests to experience the world in a more authentic, connected way.
