Women in the New Era of Work: 5 Trends Toward a Better Workplace

Stanley Black & Decker

The pandemic profoundly disrupted every aspect of our work and personal life. This is particularly true for women, who, in addition to holding down jobs, often take on primary caregiver responsibilities for their children, parents or other family members. As we enter into a new era of work in which employees have more options – flexibility is the norm, health and well-being are vital and opportunities to advance workplace gender equity are perhaps more promising than ever. According to Ashley Baron, Vice President of Human Resources for Stanley Black & Decker, seeing more women succeed and advance is going to take listening and putting practical ideas into practice. As Baron advises… These best practices can create a more desirable and equitable employee experience for women in the workplace: Offer Greater Flexibility For women who are primary caregivers, the lack of flexibility in a full-time or part-time work schedule often leaves them no choice but to leave the workforce to handle their caregiver responsibilities. The future of work urges companies and managers to give employees autonomy over where and when work gets done, so long as the output meets or exceeds deliverables. Even in some of our high-volume assembly operations facilities, where in-person work is a job requirement, we can still offer flexible schedules that allow employees to select shifts that work best for them while meeting production targets. Implement Hybrid Work Models In this new era of work, an “all or nothing” mindset just doesn’t work. Not all jobs, of course, allow for offsite work. Take, for example, hands-on manufacturing positions or roles requiring access to special equipment/technology/materials. Yet, women can perform many traditionally office-based jobs on a fully virtual or hybrid basis (part virtual, part in the office). Among the advantages of a hybrid work arrangement: employees can self-manage their productivity while having the flexibility to work in the office and connecting in person with colleagues. Modernize Benefits Offerings The world has changed dramatically in the last two years, and the needs of employees have changed, too. Employers must focus on supporting employees’ holistic well-being and understanding the stress and anxiety that the uncertainty of the pandemic continues to create, particularly for working women who statistically shoulder the home and family caregiver responsibilities most often. Where to start? By surveying employees and listening to their concerns about how an employer can help lighten their load by expanding their benefits offerings in a meaningful way. For us, the result included enhancing benefit offerings to aid caregiver responsibilities (e.g., adding in-home backup care services and virtual tutoring). By extending our free employee assistance program (EAP) globally, we also made wellness and mental health support that much more accessible. Consider Technological Enhancements To create equitable employee experiences regardless of work location/working style – research shows that “proximity bias” (an unconscious tendency to give preferential treatment to those in our immediate vicinity) is a real concern that well may pressure women, especially, to return to the office to “stay in good standing.” This is where technological advancements can help tremendously. One great enhancement Stanley Black & Decker is making to address proximity bias concerns is adding larger screens to conference room walls or in the center of the table so that virtual participants remain highly visible and can collaborate with their coworkers just as they had in virtual settings. Create New Pathways for Women With the growth of virtual and hybrid-based work arrangements, employers are competing that much harder for talent. Among the ways they can fuel those efforts and help level the playing field for working women: Provide a C-Suite Roadway Creating career development programs for women, including women of color, who have the skills and potential to lead is so critical. There’s no better time to identify and develop women as successors to executive or C-suite level roles. Help Women More Easily “Return” to Work Tapping into talent by targeting atypical applicant pools, such as “returners” who want to get back to work after taking time away for caregiver responsibilities but fear their time away makes them unqualified or less qualified. By creating a returner program – as we’ve done at Stanley Black & Decker – employers can find a whole new pipeline of motivated and qualified talent. In this new era of work, thinking differently and taking action will make all the difference. Want to explore more? Over Ten Years of R&D in Imaging leads us to a New Era of Computational Video with the OPPO Find X5 Pro and MariSilicon X

OPPO

SHENZHEN, CHINA - Media OutReach - 3 March 2022 - The OPPO Find X5 Pro is the result of a decade of research and development in mobile camera systems. It started in the early days of computer vision algorithm experiments, breaking from the traditional model to work out how a phone camera should “think”. 2014 brought us pixel binning technology, where multiple sensor pixels are combined for better images in low light, while a demosaic technique is used to improve sharpness during the day. From 2014 to 2018 we saw the rise of OIS and computational photography that make capturing crystal clear night photos not just possible but easy. OPPO’s Find X5 Pro collates this knowledge and takes it to the next level with a particular focus on low-light video, where each frame has detail, clarity and dynamic range comparable with a still night mode photo. However, to get here OPPO had to solve a bottleneck it found around 2019, by which time OPPO phones used techniques like advanced AI noise reduction, multi-exposure night shooting and face recognition. These demand a lot of work to be done instantaneously, causing a spike in power consumption. The ultimate solution is also the key to the OPPO Find X5 Pro’s paradigm-shifting photographic power: OPPO MariSilicon X. This is a self-developed core imaging NPU designed with a laser focus on computational and AI photography workloads. It unlocks the processing power required for the OPPO FInd X5 Pro’s next-generation imaging capabilities. 4K Ultra Night Video Computational video is the new battleground for phone cameras. OPPO phones have made huge leaps in low-light photo performance in the last four years, but video introduces a fresh set of challenges. A phone can spend several seconds capturing and collating the data for a single still image. But the OPPO Find X5 Pro needs to generate 30 or 60 images per second for video, handling up to three billion pixels of information every second. The scale of the challenge is immense, necessitating the paradigm-shifting power of MariSilicon X, which is capable of up to 18 trillion operations per second. 4K Ultra Night Video is the key demonstration of this power in action. It offers low-light video with dynamic range and detail comparable with the OPPO Find X5 Pro’s night photos, bringing light to darkness and restoring subtle gradations that are so often lost. How? The OPPO Find X5 Pro’s 4K Ultra Night Video employs a combination of AINR, artificial intelligence noise reduction, and 3DNR to maximize the detail and dynamic range of your videos. 3DNR reaches beyond traditional techniques, comparing subsequent frames to best represent the motion of the real world. DOL-HDR also lets the OPPO Find X5 Pro capture two frames concurrently, for real-time HDR imaging free of ghosting. The power of OPPO’s MariSilicon X imaging NPU has made the impossible possible. Ultra Night Pro The OPPO Find X5 Pro also brings revolutionary upgrades to further improve the low-light stills photography performance established in the multi award-winning OPPO Find X3 Pro. It debuts OPPO's OPPO’s SLR-level 5-axis OIS. Both lens and sensor elements can compensate for moments in your hand, allowing for flawless image capture. In action, you see the OPPO Find X5 Pro generate pristine low-light pictures almost three times as quickly as the previous generation of OPPO flagship phones. What you don’t see is the bustling hive of activity that occurs behind the scenes. The OPPO Find X5 Pro camera creates photos out of multiple exposures, like an oil painter building up a masterwork using layer upon layer of fine glazes. Ultra HDR Photography and video Night photography and video are proving grounds for the OPPO Find X5 Pro camera. The dream of being able to capture not just stills, but also great video, in any situation has been realized. However, some of the same techniques are a crucial component in a host of other situations. Picture a bright sunset. The rich and brilliant oranges and reds of the sky sit in stark contrast to the dark foreground. A lesser phone might leave these foreground elements draped in shadow, but the MariSilicon X’s HDR fusion algorithm allows for up to 20 stops of dynamic range. It brings out every last fine detail without leaving the sky washed out, threatening to obliterate the swathes of color that come to define every great sunset image. OPPO’s Find X5 Pro is ready to capture these moments, where the sky seems alight with color, cascading off the contours of each cloud. The OPPO Find X5 Pro can achieve the same effect when shooting 4K video too thanks to DOL-HDR, constructing high dynamic range footage free of ghosting artifacts even when your subject is in motion. OPPO’s Find X5 Pro represents a generation leap for the hardware and software in phone cameras. It brings renewed creative control and a paradigm shift in low-light video. Only one question remains: what would you enjoy most about the OPPO Find X5 Pro camera? Contact Details OPPO Media Contact press@oppo.com

Corporate Water Use and Stewardship in the Era of Climate Change

Keysight Technologies

Water is a limited and valuable natural resource that is threatened by global climate change, the effects of which are already apparent. For example, many areas of the United States have seen less annual rainfall over the last 50 years. Around the world, water scarcity already affects  one in three  people, and  less than 1%  of the earth’s water is safe for consumption. In addition, according to the  EPA, continued climate change is likely to lead to an increase in water demand while at the same time shrinking water supplies, particularly in areas where populations are growing. Even in areas that are not at such a high risk for water shortages, an increase in flooding or a rise in sea level is expected, which in turn impacts the quality of available water and severely damages infrastructure used for the delivery of consumable water.   These impacts on water supply directly affect agriculture, energy production, environmental ecosystems, and, of course, human health. But it also goes beyond those impacts and can affect business operations across industries, which can take an additional community and economic toll. As such, Keysight actively works towards water conservation and reducing our exposure to water-related risks.   Keysight’s Dedication to Wise Water Use and Stewardship  Though Keysight, as a software and solutions-based company, isn’t a significant user of water and has minimal risk to business operations from water-related issues, we believe it is important for all companies to help enable a sustainable future and we do our part accordingly. Along with multiple environmental programs that support mitigating the effects of climate change, Keysight utilizes a strategic approach to our water stewardship through water usage, treatment, and conservation efforts. Our water usage  Keysight manufacturing facilities use water for direct operational processes in wafer fab and micro part processing, and in indirect operations primarily for consumption (e.g., drinking water, restrooms, and cafeterias) and chiller systems. Most of the water used by Keysight is withdrawn from third party sources, such as municipal supply, with a small percentage withdrawn from well water. Regardless, all water discharged by Keysight is managed and treated by municipal wastewater treatment systems and meets discharge requirements. Our water treatment  Keysight uses onsite wastewater treatment plants at three of our manufacturing sites. An example of the treatment is a pH adjustment to within 5.5-12.5 before discharging to the municipality. Treated water is reused, where viable, for landscape irrigation and in specific process systems, such as wet scrubbers.  Our water conservation We feel strongly about the conservation of water. In 2015, as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) vision, we set a five-year water conservation key impact goal. We are pleased to report that, after surpassing the original 10% water conservation goal in fiscal year 2017, continued benefits from implemented actions enabled the company to end fiscal year 2020 with 18.9% water conservation per 2015 baseline. Responding to Adverse Environmental Impacts  Just as important as implementing these efforts is the need to regularly assess and report on their results. To support continuous improvement, part of Keysight’s DNA as a measurement company, we report annually on our water consumption and conservation efforts. In addition, we regularly assess for water-related risks that could impact our business, using the World Resources Institute (WRI) Aqueduct Water Risk Atlas to review water stress in areas where we operate. These efforts help ensure we are addressing consequential water-related matters, not only for our operations but also the communities in which we operate. Water Stewardship is the Responsibility of Every Company As members of communities around the world, corporations have a role to play in preserving natural resources, and that includes water stewardship. All companies need to be cognizant of their water use and impact in a way that is environmentally sustainable, socially equitable and economically beneficial. A Perfect Fit: How 3D Printing Is Shaping a New Era of Customized Care

HP Inc.

By Jackie Snow When you think about the possibilities 3D printing brings to healthcare — things like  bioprinted organs  and a  custom mix of medications printed in a single pill  — it sounds straight out of science fiction. Custom-printed kidneys or personalized pills may not be available just yet, but 3D printing is already improving healthcare for people, particularly in the fields of prosthetics and orthotics, devices worn on the body to help correct structural issues or provide support. 3D printing gives healthcare professionals the ability to tailor these devices to fit individual patients, resulting in improved comfort and a better experience. “3D printing excels at personalization and customization,” says Philipp Jung, global head of orthotic solutions at HP, and general manager of  Arize, HP’s new orthotics solution. “And there’s nothing more personal than the human body.” The market for personalized orthotics, prosthetics, and related custom health and wellness solutions is nearly $10 billion, according to HP research. From sockets for prosthetic limbs to helmets for newborns to casts for broken bones, the ability to create one-of-a-kind products at scale with 3D printing — also known as mass personalization — is transforming healthcare to be more precise, relevant, and responsive to individual needs. “3D printing has offered us a freedom to design and manufacture,” says  Deepak Kalaskar, an associate professor in the Department of Orthopedic and Musculoskeletal Science at University College London, with expertise in biomedical engineering. “We are currently very much at the infancy of 3D printing, but that’s not stopping anyone from thinking about how we are going to use this revolutionizing technology.” Pain relief through personalization More than three-quarters of  Americans will experience foot pain  at some point in their lives, according to the  American Podiatric Medical Association.  Arize Orthotic Solution, an end-to-end digital solution developed with HP technology, is designed to relieve some of that pain with better-fitting, 3D-printed custom orthotics. Using Arize, doctors can capture an image of a patient's foot with a scanner in as little as two minutes. From there, the software lets the doctor review the foot’s scan, choose and customize an insole, and send the order to a 3D-printing facility. When the insoles eventually wear out or if the patient wants a pair of orthotics for a different style of shoe, the same measurements can be used to reorder, saving the patient another trip. “It’s a more efficient process,” says Gavin Ripp, a podiatrist who’s been using Arize at  Premier Podiatry & Orthopedics, in the Sacramento, California, area. “We’re able to get devices back quicker, and they are easy to replicate.”  The new process is not only more precise, it also results in a lower-profile, less clunky device. “Patients are really liking that they can put them into a wider variety of shoes than what was possible before,” Ripp says. Better fitting casts and splints For injuries that require immobilization of part of the body, ActivArmor is the first and only provider of 3D-printed casts and splints, with products for feet, ankles, legs, arms, hands, wrists, and fingers. Besides being custom fit, the casts are waterproof, breathable, and hygienic so the user can bathe like normal. The shell-like structure reveals the skin underneath without reducing strength and durability. “In a traditional cast, you can only see at the two ends of the cast — everything inside, including movement, is hidden,” says Diana Hall, CEO of ActivArmor. “With ActivArmor, you can see and make adjustments throughout the course of healing, which improves outcomes. Doctors use a free iPhone app to scan the affected body part for measurements and get a custom-fitted cast within a few days. It can be ordered locked-on for compliance, or easily removable per doctor’s orders. ActivArmor recently launched a 3D-printed  walking boot, which is waterproof, lighter, and more breathable than other orthopedic boots, with the bonus of being custom-designed for each patient’s unique injury or condition. “There is no one-size-fits-all solution for immobilization,” Hall says. “3D printing allows for patient-specific medicine, with every device custom designed and made for a patient’s unique injury, treatment, and lifestyle.” A more comfortable device for growing babies The  malleability of a newborn’s skull means the shape of an infant’s head is sometimes made uneven while passing through the birth canal or can develop lopsided changes from lying a certain way too long. More than 3% of newborns have severe or very severe head shape deformity, with up to 50% experiencing a mild or medium deformity. Doctors often turn to orthotic treatment using a helmet to gently reshape the head. Traditionally, those helmets were made by re-creating the head shape carved in foam and then building the device around it, a time-consuming process that only got close to a good fit. Healthcare technology company  Invent Medical  devised a better way, with a solution called  Talee, a cranial 3D-printed helmet  that has helped babies in 30 countries already. “3D printing represents the opportunity of not just how to change the product, but even the process of how the babies are treated,” says Jiří Rosicky, Invent Medical’s CEO. HP Multi Jet Fusion  3D printing reduces the time it takes to create a helmet by half. The more breathable form and perforated structure can be made with lighter material, which makes the helmet more comfortable for the baby, even in the summertime when parents might be tempted to take it off to help with the heat. Rosicky says even offering a variety of colors has helped parents deal with the societal pressure of drawing unwanted attention to their baby. “From the point of view of clinical specialists, aesthetics has a lower priority than function, but it’s very important for parents,” Rosicky says. “How you feel about a product is tied into how the treatment is accepted, and if you are more confident in the treatment process, it really helps." Customizing sockets for prosthetic limbs After an accident in 2009 that resulted in his legs being amputated, Chris Hutchison felt lucky to be alive. Adjusting to the prosthetics he used to get around was an added stress in an already trying time. The socket that was the critical interface between his residual limb and the rest of the prosthetic had to be sculpted by hand. Chris used a wheelchair while it took multiple trips over several weeks to get the right fit. Even then, the socket was uncomfortable and even painful at times.  Alan Hutchison, Chris’s father and an engineer by training, wanted something better for his son. The father-and-son team started   Prosfit  in 2014, a company that uses HP’s Multi Jet Fusion 3D printing to  make better-fitting sockets more quickly, so others don’t have to go through what Chris did. According to a  World Health Organization report, more than 35 million people around the world are in need of prosthetics or orthotics, but only one in 10 has access to or can afford the devices they need. By digitizing the process of designing, fitting, and manufacturing a prosthetic socket, ProsFit has reduced the time it takes to make and deliver a socket from weeks to days, and with far fewer steps, lowering the cost and making the process more convenient for patients. The final sockets can now be made and fitted in only two visits and cost 25% less than the handmade ones. “Our vision is a world where innovation provides limb wearers a choice of affordable, reliable, and desirable prosthetic products and services,” Alan Hutchison says. “Digital technologies including 3D printing make this possible.” View additional multimedia and more ESG storytelling from HP Inc. on 3blmedia.com
