Democracy Think Tank, Section 1, Announces Release of Founder, Peter Biro’s, “Conscience-Shocking” First Music video of his Dramatic Rock Ballad, “Just History Now”

Section 1

Peter Biro, the founder of Section 1, a democracy think tank, has announced the release of a music video to accompany a powerful conscience-raising rock ballad, “Just History Now”. Biro hopes to attract the attention of politicians, educators, journalists and the civil society sectors to the song’s urgent and compelling message for the world of today. Biro calls it “a love letter to humanity in a dark age. A lament for the human condition. An irrefutable case for pessimism. An eternal reason for hope.” “This is us! This is about who we are”, says Biro. “Humanity is not divided into the good ones and the bad ones. We are each possessed of benign and evil inclinations. We seem condemned to both revisit and repeat our past atrocities, even as we atone and take stock of our own immortality. Every politician should watch. Every activist will want to share. Every high school should set aside 6 minutes and 22 seconds at its morning assembly for this.” Lawyer, writer, educator, think-tank founder, democracy activist, Chair Emeritus of the Jane Goodall Institute Global, and songwriter, Peter L. Biro, pays tribute to his late father and Holocaust survivor, George Biro, while calling us all “to look honestly at the hard truths about the nature of human nature!” “What have we done since Bergen Belsen? What have we learned from Birkenau? Where are the desaparecidos? It’s all just history now”. Beautifully conceived, performed and recorded in 2000, but never released, Biro decided that, tragically, the song was even more relevant and timely today than when he wrote it over two decades ago. JUST HISTORY NOW, and other songs by Peter, can be streamed at http://itunes.apple.com/album/id1601499105?ls=1&app=itunes http://itunes.apple.com/album/id/1601499105 https://open.spotify.com/artist/5D9wk6ZDyqCDKtm12gJXlo?4, and most online music stores. What Captain Planet Can Teach Us About Sustainable Palm Oil

Musim Mas

The 90s animated TV series “Captain Planet and the Planeteers” inspired a generation of millennials like myself to speak out against unsustainable practices and appeal for a better environment. I am not an eco-warrior, but there is a small part of the planeteer in me. The pandemic years started an impetus to find work that added meaning to the daily grind. So here I am, in my new role at Musim Mas, in a controversial industry that is not an obvious choice for a meaningful job. Over the first 30 days, my realization is that palm oil is here to stay, whether we like it or not. The world demanded almost 200 million metric tons of palm oil in 2020, and the demand is expected to cross 250 million by 2026 1. Palm is the highest-yielding crop for vegetable oil by a mile. If we were to replace the amount of land planted for palm with sunflowers for their oil, we would get only about a quarter, and with soya beans, only about one-sixth. Therefore, the question is not about replacing palm oil but how do we make its production more sustainable. So what else can we do to get there? Like the Planeteers, we can only succeed with our powers combined. Our recent Sustainability Townhall for our external stakeholders shows the company’s strides beyond the Group’s operations, focusing on work with our suppliers and smallholders. The townhall also presented the key trends revolving around our efforts to ramp up third-party verification related to our no-deforestation, peat and exploitation (NDPE) commitments. The main emphasis was that progress in sustainability in the palm oil industry would only be possible with collaboration. “Collaboration” might seem overused as corporate jargon, but it is essential. Smallholder farmers own 40% of the total amount of palm oil plantations, and that number is forecasted to increase to 60% by 2030. Independent smallholders especially need the support of the government and the private sector to gain legitimacy with verifiable land deeds that would enable them financial access necessary for sustainable livelihoods and training on sustainable agricultural practices. This is why Musim Mas has made smallholder support one of our top priorities in sustainability, and we have implemented a range of programs in this area. This includes among other programs, a credit cooperative for scheme smallholders to training hubs for independent smallholders in collaboration with district governments. We believe in mentoring and accompanying our suppliers on their journey towards sustainable palm oil, with third-party suppliers contributing to 90% of our supply. We’ve conducted extensive workshops resulted in 97% of our suppliers submitting NDPE commitments as of December 2021. Going further, we adopt a traceability to plantation (TTP) approach, and at present, we have achieved 83% TTP for our third-party supply base- up from 60% in 2019.  Through these supplier collaborations, we ultimately aim to transform our supply base. Captain Planet didn’t work alone and could only appear when summoned by a team of five young heroes, known as Planeteers. The planeteers were diverse in terms of race, geography, and gender. Like the global rallying cry to save the planet from the excesses of humans, the industry will need to find its planeteer moment. Whether you are from the Global South or North, regardless of your consumption profile or profession, we all have a part to play if we want more sustainable palm oil products on our supermarket shelves. 1 https://www.reportlinker.com/p087311/World-Vegetable-Oils-Markets.html?utm_source=GNW View additional multimedia and more ESG storytelling from Musim Mas on 3blmedia.com

Sustainable Certification In Palm Oil - Always A Work In Progress

Musim Mas

Over the years, sustainability certification systems across various commodities have been both praised and criticized. In particular, the  RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil)  has been under intense scrutiny. Greenpeace, Environmental Investigation Agency, and other NGOs have highlighted gaps and areas of improvement for sustainable palm oil and other sustainability certification schemes[1]. First – let’s explore why it works for business. Voluntary, multistakeholder schemes such as the RSPO have seen certification allowing for ‘sustainable’ goods exchanges between the Global South and the North, in a framework managed by the parties most involved (read producers, users, and NGO/CSO). Additionally, as a corporate with comprehensive operations, a certification scheme offers a structured approach to set up processes buttressed by robust governance to ensure that sustainable practices are implemented consistently and efficiently throughout the organization. Indeed, there are limitations and room for improvement as we better understand issues on the ground, as with any set of rules, voluntary or mandatory. So, we ask ourselves: How do we further improve the RSPO? How do we reach interested stakeholders who might not want to join the RSPO but have ideas for further improvement? The  Palm Oil Innovation Group (POIG)  was formed to raise the bar for the RSPO by developing and implementing innovations beyond the 2013 RSPO standard. In 2015, Musim Mas was invited to join POIG and remains the only Southeast Asian member. (In 2019, Musim Mas became verified as compliant with the POIG standard.) When the RSPO Principles and Criteria (P&C) 2018 was developed and endorsed, as a member of POIG, we welcomed it since it presented substantive improvements to the certification standards. It included elements of POIG, notably the High Carbon Stock Approach (HCSA) toolkit, and stricter NDPE restrictions such as no planting on peat regardless of depth. The new standard showed that RSPO was ready to adopt best practices established by POIG and already demonstrated by its members. Far from being an unambitious group, the RSPO demonstrated it is aiming for the best possible impacts. RSPO may not be perfect, but it has led the way towards establishing and maintaining deforestation- and exploitation-free physical supply chains that connect producers and consumers. It allows us and our peers to challenge and improve our practices and dialog about companies’ challenges. Yet, we are mindful that RSPO certification is not static and is a work in progress. Our presence at the RSPO Board of Governors and active involvement in the organization allow us to address the challenges faced by the members while supporting the improvement of the standard. For RSPO to make sustainable palm oil the norm, it needs stakeholders to appreciate its value that it supports and encourages further progress by being the most accessible platform for all to explore issues and challenges in a constructive manner. It also allows financial rewards for producers and a way to show progress for consumers of palm oil. Musim Mas Supports Over 1,200 Independent Smallholders to Gain Certification Under the New ISPO 2020 Standard- Minister of Agriculture Decree No.38

Musim Mas

MEDAN, Indonesia, December 17, 2021 /3BL Media/ - More than 1,200 independent smallholder farmers from Musim Mas’ Smallholders Program have become the first in Indonesia to be certified under the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) Minister of Agriculture Decree No.38 of 2020 (ISPO 38/2020) standard. These smallholders’ estates collectively cover over 2,700 hectares of land, representing more than 20% of the total 12,600 hectare of ISPO-certified land under the new regulation. This represents the largest group of independent smallholders to gain certification under the new standard. The smallholders are part of three farmers associations - Asosiasi Pekebun Swadaya Kelapa Sawit Labuhanbatu (APSKS LB), Perkumpulan Pekebun Swadaya Kelapa Sawit Rokan Hulu (PPSKS Rohul) and Asosiasi Pekebun Swadaya Kelapa Sawit Pelalawan Siak (APSKS PS), located across North Sumatra and Riau provinces. Musim Mas plays a facilitator role in the farmers associations.  Established in 2011, the Indonesian ISPO standard ensures that Indonesian palm oil products can access the global markets and support the achievement of Indonesia’s smallholder commitments. Certification also benefits farmers by encouraging sustainable practices, ensuring the legality of owned land, and compliance with local laws and regulations. Since then, the certification scheme has been enhanced through the Ministry of Agriculture Decree No.11 of 2015 and more recently with Decree No.38 of 2020 (ISPO 38/2020), which aims to expand certified areas and continually improve the quality of certification. ISPO certification will be made mandatory for all oil palm companies in Indonesia, including smallholders in 2025. Additionally, ISPO 38/2020 expands the protection of forests from primary forests to forests in general. Smallholders face complex and interlinked challenges around yields, plantation management, land ownership, financial access, market access, and economies of scale. To contribute to livelihoods and the betterment of the industry, Musim Mas has developed and implemented programs to integrate independent smallholders into palm oil supply chains since 2015. We engage and assist smallholders in meeting the same efficient farming standards as industrial plantations and completing program modules covering agronomy and NDPE commitments, thus empowering them to produce sustainably. To assist smallholders with access to financing and legal land titles, the International Finance Corporation (IFC)-Musim Mas smallholder program was also established in 2015. Access to financing has the potential to help smallholders replace ageing palms, switch to higher yield seeds, purchase fertilizer, or obtain relevant certifications. As of 2020, over 32,100 smallholders have been engaged, of whom 14% supply directly to Musim Mas. The remaining 86% smallholders have had the same access to and benefited equally from the program. Since 2020, Musim Mas has also developed Smallholder Hubs in Aceh, engaging smallholders on a district level. These hubs create a common platform where palm oil companies can share their expertise and resources to train agricultural officers who can then train independent smallholders within a specific district, regardless of to whom they sell.  “Musim Mas is firmly committed to improving the livelihoods of independent smallholders and the production of sustainable palm oil. As a key player in Indonesia’s palm oil industry, we are glad to support the government’s drive to increase ISPO certifications by reaching out to independent smallholders. We will also continue to expand our program for smallholders. Through which, we aim to empower them with technological skills, sustainable agricultural practices, and help them integrate into sustainable palm oil supply chains and marketplace,” said Rob Nicholls, General Manager of Programs and Projects, Musim Mas. Mr. Dedi Junaedi, Head of National Secretariat RAN KSB and Deputy Head of Secretariat of the ISPO Committee commented "On behalf The Directorate of Estate Crops, Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia, we are highly appreciative of Musim Mas' efforts and we would like to express our congratulations. We Hope this achievement by Musim Mas and its partners may motivate & inspire other independent smallholder palm oil cooperatives/ associations to participate in the ISPO certification program, which is also a component of the President Instruction (Inpres) Number 6/2019 on the National Action Plan on Sustainable Palm Oil Development for 2019 - 2024 (RAN KSB)," said Mr. Junaedi. How Can We Support Biodiversity In Oil Palm Landscapes?

Musim Mas

While oil palm cultivation is a significant economic driver and can lift people out of poverty, it can also have a negative impact on biodiversity, mostly due to the conversion of tropical forests and species-rich habitats. As palm oil remains one of the most land-efficient and shelf stable vegetable oils [1], enhancing conservation efforts to support biodiversity is vital. The  IUCN  (International Union for Conservation of Nature),  RSPO  (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil), local governments, and other stakeholders have urged producers to manage their existing oil palm plantations more responsibly, to reduce impacts on biodiversity. The industry accomplishes this by setting aside areas identified as important for biodiversity and carbon [2], typically using the High Carbon Stock (HCS) and High Conservation Value (HCV) approaches [3]. Fine-Tuning the Industry’s Efforts to Support Biodiversity Musim Mas has undertaken a variety of conservation interventions across its plantations. These include the reforestation of riparian zones and enhancement vegetation with forest trees in HCV areas. Over the years, Musim Mas has also added new areas to its conservation hectarage, including steep terrain regions, wildlife corridors, and riparian buffer zones not identified by HCV and HCS assessments. In addition, Musim Mas has taken an active conservation approach by making use of a monitoring system within its HCV/HCS sites and surrounding areas. Using both camera traps and trained on-site staff, Musim Mas conducts a monthly census at each site, recording the presence of certain wildlife like reptiles, mammals, and birds. After documenting the number of wildlife species, their activities, and their nesting locations, data is collected and used to improve conservation efforts. Assessing the Impacts of Musim Mas’ Decade-Long Conservation Efforts To assess the effectiveness of these interventions, Musim Mas  began partnering with  South East Asia Rainforest Research Partnership  (SEARRP) in 2020. SEARRP will independently analyze  its decade-long conservation efforts in the Group’s plantations.  The SEARRP research is threefold: Independent assessment of the effectiveness of HCV monitoring efforts Development of a biodiversity baseline for HCV areas Recalibration of conservation efforts In addition to ensuring that its monitoring efforts are appropriate, SEARRP will work with Musim Mas to develop a sector-wide monitoring protocol, and also employ statistical analyses to better understand wildlife trends to determine if species richness are increasing in response to Musim Mas’ conservation efforts. Lastly, the SEARRP research will link scientific evidence to the company’s efforts to determine which are most effective. Without scientific evidence, conservation plans might remain guesswork, so these insights will be of interest to the palm oil sector at large. Musim Mas’ Plan Moving Forward Ultimately, this research will enable Musim Mas to prioritise the conservation efforts that are making the biggest impact, while also enabling the company to better understand monitoring efficacy and natural biodiversity trends. In addition, identifying how species move across landscapes to access food, new habitats, or mates will allow Musim Mas to make improvements to HCV and set-aside networks to avoid species losses and support biodiversity. Once the abundance of data is analysed, Musim Mas will be equipped with the knowledge of how different management options influence biodiversity and how forest reforestation in different HCV patches will support conservation efforts. The SEARRP research will significantly influence future policies and procedures, as well as form a reliable case study for RSPO members. Ultimately, this research will support Musim Mas’ efforts in setting measurable objectives to avoid species losses and improve biodiversity on our plantations. Together with SEARRP, Musim Mas envisions a future where oil palm landscapes can continue to foster both economic development and healthy, biodiverse ecosystems. [1]  https://www.wwf.org.uk/updates/8-things-know-about-palm-oil   [2] Prior to any new development, Musim Mas carries out rigorous assessments and follows the process outlined in the RSPO New Planting Procedure (NPP), including identifying and conserving areas with HCV and HCS. Since 2014, we have been estimating the carbon stock of proposed development areas and significant potential sources of emissions that may result directly from development. To ensure the credibility of our HCV and HCS assessments, they are all carried out by accredited and registered licensed assessors and practitioners. [3] High Conservation Value (HCV) an High Carbon Stock (HCS) aim to identify important environmental and social values that should be addressed and conserved prior to new development.  View additional multimedia and more ESG storytelling from Musim Mas on 3blmedia.com
