Why We Should Be Paying More Attention To Water Consumption - An Oil Palm Perspective

Musim Mas

In Southeast Asia, talk of water consumption might seem trivial. Rainfall is plentiful, with Singapore and Indonesia experiencing annual rainfalls of upwards of 2165mm[1] and 3700mm[2], respectively. While water conservation might not seem like a pressing issue, it’s important to recognize that higher rainfall does not equate an abundant water supply. When rain falls, a portion of it is absorbed into the ground. This replenishes groundwater and makes its way into the water supply for human consumption. In rural areas, about 50% re-enters the ground while in urban areas, that proportion is only around 15%[3]. Most of the water flows away as runoff[4], which re-supplies streams, rivers, and lakes. Beyond growing human consumption, climate change and extreme weather events further impact rainfall amount and distribution, exacerbating both water inundation and scarcity[5]. The Oil Palm Industry’s Response to Water Consumption According to Carbon Disclosure Project’s (CDP) research, two-thirds of the world’s largest companies report that water-related risks could generate a substantive change in their operations and revenue. As the oil palm supply chain relies also on water, water stewardship[6] should become one of the industry’s key priorities. Quantifying a company’s water footprint is increasingly becoming as important as its carbon footprint. The water footprint is a measure of the amount of water consumed and polluted in all processing stages of production. This also takes into consideration the volume of freshwater that is required to dilute the load of pollutants to meet water quality standards. Understanding the water footprint enables companies to find out where and when water is used in their supply chain and provides a benchmark for reducing water use. Musim Mas' Efforts to Reduce its Water Footprint Musim Mas has adopted the Water Footprint Network’s assessment methodology to assess its overall water consumption, relative to precipitation levels. Musim Mas has implemented several measures to minimize its water footprint, such as optimising industrial processes, further improving water management on peat, restoring riparian zones, as well as water saving campaigns for its workers.  Musim Mas set itself a target to reduce mill water usage intensity below 1.2m3 / mt FFB in 2021 and in the coming years. At the end of 2020 it had successfully achieved mill water usage intensity of 1.17m3 / mt FFB. This achievement is ahead of its set target. Using water efficiently in operations is key to reducing impact on the environment and to maintain natural river and stream flows. This is of vital importance as climate change might bring longer and more extreme dry spells. Musim Mas also prioritizes using fertilizers with a smaller water footprints to reduce water consumption. Conserving Peatlands and Providing Clean Water for Surrounding Communities Musim Mas regulates water levels and maintains water tables in its cultivated peat areas. This is in accordance with local regulations and to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. As at December 2020, 4,253 hectares of peat areas were set aside as conservation areas, supporting the natural water regulation of the area. 35,526 hectares are planted and managed under Best Management Practices. Peatlands play an important role in regulating water cycle by providing water storage and supply. While clean water is accessible to workers living on its plantations, Musim Mas strives to do more to support neighboring villages. While the Indonesian government already provides drinking water, Musim Mas further supports water needs by building  wells in communities living in the vicinity of its operations to supply water for other uses. Read more about Musim Mas’ contribution towards drinking water and sanitation services in its Social Impact Report at this link. While water consumption is not the only factor contributing to water scarcity, sustainable water resource management will be vital for mitigating the impacts of climate change and support a growing agriculture sector, especially as independent smallholders are projected to manage 60% of oil palm land by 2030. It is therefore crucial for countries and businesses to innovate and use available water resources efficiently and equitably. [6]  Water stewardship is a set of practices to be used by utilities, businesses, communities, and others to promote and enable the sustainable and equitable management of freshwater resources (waterfootprint.org).  View additional multimedia and more ESG storytelling from Musim Mas on 3blmedia.com

Musim Mas Launches Interactive Webpage and 3rd Annual Aceh Report to Communicate on Progress in the Aceh Province

Musim Mas

Musim Mas publishes our third Aceh Progress Report. Aceh Province is a priority landscape to Musim Mas due to its unique biodiversity, history, and 87% of the Aceh-Leuser Ecosystem lies in the Aceh province. This year, we also launched a dedicated webpage for the Aceh province to ensure stakeholders’ ease of finding specific information on Musim Mas’s work. This year’s report covers the progress on targets made, following the debut of our five-year strategy and roadmap for the Aceh landscape last year. The strategy, summarised in our 2020 Aceh progress report, details the objectives and targets for implementing our No Deforestation, No Peat, and No Exploitation (NDPE) policy. The Aceh landscape strategy comprises three objectives, namely Engagement, Assurance, and Monitoring and Response. Firstly, the Engagement objective entails outreach to independent smallholders and mills to convey NDPE requirements and the possible consequences of non-compliance. The Assurance objective ensures that the mills supplying crude palm oil and palm kernels to Musim Mas are NDPE compliant. Finally, the Monitoring and Response objective contains proactive elements to detect and verify deforestation at the landscape or jurisdictional level. All three objectives have a stated set of measurable targets to indicate progress. This year’s report also published new Musim Mas’ No Deforestation, No Peat (NDP) Risk Management Framework, field-tested in the Aceh Province. The risk framework will better assess the risk of non-compliance with No Deforestation and No Peatland requirements of our operations and third-party suppliers (which includes mills, concessions, smallholders, and outgrowers) supplying our mills and refineries. Mapping out the risks allows us to focus our mitigation efforts towards high-risk mills by engaging suppliers to ensure NDP compliance. Looking at Aceh through the lens of risk, we can prioritize and focus our efforts towards developing strategies to assess and mitigate risks surrounding our supply sheds. This year, despite COVID-19, we have continued our efforts to implement our Aceh landscape strategy and have made significant headway since the first edition of our report. The link to our Aceh Webpage and Aceh Report 2021 can be found here. View additional multimedia and more ESG storytelling from Musim Mas on 3blmedia.com

Musim Mas Distributed 23,400 Doses of Covid-19 Vaccines to Help Accelerate Herd Immunity

Musim Mas

As support for the government, which is conducting a Covid-19 vaccination program, Musim Mas Group is helping to accelerate herd immunity through vaccination programs for workers, workers' families, and communities around the company. The number of vaccinations distributed from August until now is at 23,400 vaccines doses and is continuing. In this Mutual Cooperation Vaccination activity, Musim Mas collaborates with Biofarma and the local government. Musim Mas and its subsidiaries also vaccinated 2,000 Primary Credit Cooperative Members (KKPA – Kooperasi Kredit Primer Anggota), the community, and school children as part of their CSR activities. GM Corporate Affairs of Musim Mas Group, Gunawan Siregar, explained this vaccination activities will be held from August to October 2021. PT Musim Mas and its six subsidiaries, namely PT Berkat Sawit Sejati (BSS), PT Guntung Idaman Nusa (GIN), PT Sukajadi Sawit Mekar (SSM), PT Maju Aneka Sawit (MAS), PT Unggul Lestari (UL), and PT Multipersada Gatramegah (MPG). The Covid-19 vaccination activity carried out by Musim Mas is a Mutual Cooperation Vaccination (VGR – Vaksinasi Gotong Royong), as mandated by the Regulation of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Number 19 of 2021, concerning the Second Amendment to the Regulation of the Minister of Health Number 10 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Vaccination in the Context of Combating the Covid-19 Pandemic. Musim Mas Group uses the Sinopharm vaccine through the Mutual Cooperation Vaccination scheme. "To make the Mutual Cooperation Vaccination program a success, Musim Mas is collaborating with PT Bio Farma as the business entity appointed to provide the Covid-19 vaccine in the Mutual Cooperation Vaccine program," said Gunawan in a press release, 15th October. The Sinopharm vaccine is a corona vaccine that has received approval from the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM – Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan). Sinopharm is a vaccine with an Inactivated Virus platform or a virus that has been weakened to expose the immune system to viruses without risking a serious disease response. The main target of this vaccination activity is focused on workers, their families, and the surrounding community. This is done to ensure that the workers of Musim Mas subsidiaries and their family members are protected from the dangers of Covid-19 and help the government accelerate Herd Immunity in Indonesia. Gunawan said that Musim Mas held this program as part of the company's concern to create herd immunity for workers, workers' families, and the environment around the company by supporting the government's Mutual Cooperation Vaccination program. According to him, there are some obstacles faced in the implementation of vaccination, including workers, their families, or the community who are not willing to be vaccinated because they receive a lot of negative information outside. As a solution, the company actively conducts continuous socialization in providing understanding, and there is an increase in those willing to be vaccinated. "While the vaccination exercise has been done, the company continues to implement the health and Covid-19 prevention protocols. The company also continues to provide special socialization to all workers and their families, and the community so that they can continue to carry out the health protocols in their daily lives," he hopes. Qualcomm Small Business Accelerator Program Provides Fast Linksys Mesh WI-FI Systems to Guitars in the Classroom To Accelerate Remote Music Education

Qualcomm

The need for fast, reliable connectivity has only accelerated in 2021, particularly for small businesses. Communication is critical in a remote work setting, and businesses need the proper technology working with them to continue accomplishing their goals in a digital-first environment.    The  Qualcomm Small Business Accelerator Program  exists to make the transition to a mobile-first small business a reality for owners across the U.S. Working alongside leading technology partners, the program provides laptops, smartphones, Wi-Fi networks, support, and other digital tools necessary to lead a thriving business.  Education is an area where digital tools and infrastructure are absolutely vital for today’s classrooms, schools, students, and educators. The ongoing pandemic continues to highlight the growing need for remote learning, which, with faster broadband speeds, intuitive communication platforms, and more powerful mobile devices, becomes ever more effective. No longer will the physical classroom be the only arena for sustained, high-impact learning; more and more opportunities arise from enabling education to flourish in new spaces. Guitars in the Classroom Program participant  Guitars in the Classroom (GITC)  is a small business focused on student engagement in public schools. GITC treats music as a bridge to learning. It equips teachers and school staff with the tools they need to compose and integrate music into their curriculums and the social-emotional development of their students. In doing this, they encourage students to connect and engage. The organization’s goal is to restore music in the classroom as both an art form and a learning device through professional development courses and teaching artist residencies. The move to remote education completely upended GITC’s in-person music learning strategy. The need for online instruction required modern digital tools and infrastructure to continue offering a comparable experience virtually — tools GITC didn’t have. That’s where the Qualcomm Small Business Accelerator Program was able to help. Crucial tools like Samsung Galaxy Book S laptops, Motorola Edge+ smartphones, and  Linksys Velop MX10 Wi-Fi 6 Systems  were supplied to ensure employees could stay connected for virtual music education lessons.  Connectivity is vital to maintaining a remote classroom. The Linksys Mesh Wi-Fi 6 systems, featuring the  Qualcomm Networking Pro 1200 platform, served as a complete game changer for every employee. Using the latest advancements in tri-band Wi-Fi 6 technology, these devices allowed GITC to connect seamlessly with teachers and staff in an online environment while also taking advantage of cloud-based services to share files quickly and efficiently.  “Once we got the Linksys system in, everything changed for us,” said Jess Baron, executive director and founder of GITC. “Linksys routers were the most essential piece of technology across the board for the whole team because it instantly cured our internet problems.” “Connecting the world securely and tackling the learning gap are a couple of the pillars that the Linksys organization is built upon,” said Harry Dewhirst, CEO of Linksys. “We jumped on the opportunity to help meaningful businesses like GITC provide education to students during a time where we need the arts the most.” Wi-Fi 6  is the backbone of next-generation connectivity, and the Networking Pro 1200 platform is designed to provide the ultimate Wi-Fi 6 experience. With speeds up to 6 Gbps and reliable, secure connections even with hundreds of devices in simultaneous use, the Networking Pro 1200 platform sets the bar for premium-tier networking that enables businesses and users to accomplish goals with unprecedented speed and reliability. For GITC, this infrastructure allowed them to focus entirely on their work without technology getting in the way. “We can let go of having to work in the same space now because the equipment has liberated us and sped up our functionality,” Baron said. “Anything we’re doing where we have to communicate with each other, members of our extended team, or with teachers and schools is improving because of the tech Qualcomm Technologies provided.”  Other devices powered by Snapdragon, including the  Samsung Galaxy Book S laptops and  Motorola Edge+  smartphones, greatly improved productivity and communication between teams within GITC. The power of the  Snapdragon 8cx platform  inside the Galaxy Book S allowed employees to eliminate efficiency issues with shipping and inventory, while the  Snapdragon 865 5G platform  in the Motorola Edge+ served to boost remote productivity with seamless office line transitions to homelines. Overall, enrollment in GITC online classes more than tripled with the help of fast connectivity and powerful mobile devices. This allowed the organization to begin offering weekly classes, resulting in the business growing from five full-time employees in 2020 to 25 employees in 2021. With increased efficiency from cloud-based services and ACPCs, total revenue also increased by 20 percent.  The Qualcomm Small Business Accelerator Program helps supply the essential mobile technology that enables small businesses to connect, compute, and communicate in a digital-first world. Guitars in the Classroom provides untold value to schools across the U.S., using music to connect with students and teachers to create more accepting, engaging learning environments. We’re proud to work with our partners to outfit businesses like GITC with the tools they need to thrive. View additional multimedia and more ESG storytelling from Qualcomm on 3blmedia.com

Musim Mas Group Releases Its 4th Annual Sustainability Report With Selected Disclosures in the Report Independently Assured by Ernst & Young LLP (EY)

Musim Mas

Musim Mas Group releases its fourth annual Sustainability Report, which updates the Group’s sustainability performance for the 2020 calendar year (unless otherwise stated), and is to be read in conjunction with the sustainability-related disclosures on its website. This year, the Group has contracted Ernst & Young LLP (“EY”) to verify selected sustainability disclosures made in the report. The report is structurally aligned with the Group’s updated Sustainability Policy (2020-2025), launched in September 2020. It also introduces the Group’s contributions to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (“SDGs”). With an updated Policy, the Group lays out a renewed and deepened commitment to improving the livelihoods of smallholders, workers, and communities while maintaining a strict stance on No Deforestation, No Peat, and No Exploitation (“NDPE”). Aspiring to have a tangible, long-term impact, the Group collaborates closely with other oil palm processors, downstream actors in consumer markets, civil society entities, and governments, especially at the local level. Thus, the Group is pursuing tailored landscape programs in four provinces in Indonesia, with the support of local governments, various implementation partners, and peer collaborators. In 2020, Musim Mas published its five-year Aceh Strategy to engage various stakeholders in transforming the landscape. With this strategy, Musim Mas establishes itself as a leader in the region’s multi-pronged and multi-stakeholder sustainability efforts aimed at preserving the landscape for future generations. Highlights of the 2020 Sustainability Report: In 2020 and early 2021, Musim Mas launched three Smallholder Hubs in Aceh Tamiang, Aceh Singkil, and Dayun. In 2020, the Group assessed social programs’ impact on communities and smallholders at one of its operations in Riau. 100% of Musim Mas’ mills with plantations are RSPO-certified as of June 2021 In 2020, Musim Mas’ emission intensity was 47% less than its 2006 baseline and is well on track to achieve its 2025 target of a 55% reduction. 100% traceability of CPO to the Group’s supply base of independent smallholders has been achieved. Overall, the company has achieved 83% traceability to place of production (or traceability to plantation, TPP) and is on track to meet its target of 100% traceability by 2025.  Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Musim Mas has temporarily suspended our on-the-ground sustainability efforts in these priority landscapes. Instead, we focused our efforts exclusively on our five-year landscape strategy for Aceh in 2020. At the time of publication, the world continues to grapple with the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of the sustainability efforts in the field following government regulations have been scaled back, but the Group continued to pursue its NDPE commitments Musim Mas’ 2020 Sustainability Report can be found here. About Musim Mas Headquartered in Singapore, Musim Mas is one of the world’s largest, integrated palm oil corporations with operations in every part of the supply chain across the Americas, Europe and Asia. Our global workforce pursues innovative and sustainable developments, ensuring product quality, safety and efficiency as the industry evolves. As one of the most prominent players in the industry, it aspires to be a responsible leader in the evolution of the industry, driving a new era of sustainability with innovation. To that end, we take active steps to go beyond industry-recognized sustainability standards and will continue to step up in response to critical industry issues in our quest to contribute to a more sustainable industry and equitable world. Paving the Way Forward With Education

Musim Mas

If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.  “I always dreamt of being a teacher and will dedicate my life and resources to empower children through education,” said Rosmidar Yati, 44, a kindergarten (KG) teacher at Anwar Karim I Sorek, Pangkalan Kuras, located in PT Musim Mas Sorek. Rosmidar graduated from the University of Riau with a Bachelor’s degree in Education, majoring in early childhood education (Pendidikan Anak Usia Dini – PAUD). She started her journey as a KG teacher in 1996 and has been teaching at private schools in Pekanbaru for 14 years prior to joining Anwar Karim I. She took great pride in her profession as she believes that a nation’s future depends on its children being able to flourish. As a teacher, she feels a huge sense of responsibility to guide them in reaching their utmost potential. “Endless patience, compassion, and discipline are top three qualities KG teachers should possess,” said Rosmidar Yati. On a daily basis, she teaches children between four to five years old, the golden age to develop children’s skills, such as understanding and speech. Rosmidar helps to shape the future minds of Indonesia through creative learning sessions, group discussions, and morning assembly drills and prayers. Besides teaching, she is an active member of both KG teachers’ working groups and associations. She was recently selected as the only representative from Pelalawan, Riau Province to the BAN PAUD PNF (National Accreditation Agency For Early Children And Nonformal Education; Badan Akreditasi Nasional Pendidikan Anak Usia Dini dan Pendidikan Nonformal). As an assessor, her primary role is to evaluate schools’ accreditation. So far, she has assessed 22 schools across Riau. She views this role as a platform to create an ideal and equal education system that will benefit communities on a larger scale. Her involvement in several associations and role as assessor allows her to actively share her knowledge and address different challenges faced by teachers. In 2015, Rosmidar was awarded Riau’s Most Outstanding Kindergarten Teacher and represented the province in the national-level award. This achievement is a testament to her commitment, dedication, and supportive working environment. “The management wholeheartedly encourages us to enroll in various activities to improve our knowledge and skill and assist us along the process. For example, when I participated in the outstanding teacher and accessor programs, the company supported me by allowing me to take time off for this program and sponsored me throughout the process. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity and support from management to improve my knowledge, and I also have the full support from both my family and colleagues at the same time,” said Rosmidar as she recalled her experiences.
