'The Best Future' for Flora, Fauna . . . and Humans Too

Enbridge

Tourists and Alberta residents aren’t the only ones flocking to the Beaver Hills biosphere area for recreational purposes. More than 150 species of waterfowl stop over every year in the boreal wetlands region east of Alberta’s capital city, Edmonton—and given those numbers, Beaver Hills has rightly earned the honor of being Canada’s first established bird sanctuary, as well as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve designation. In 2017, the Nature Conservancy of Canada launched a Keep the Beaver Hills Wild campaign, focusing conservation efforts on the most at-risk parts of the 1,572-square-kilometer expanse. Some of the area is already protected as provincial and national parks; other sections are privately owned. Right down the center lies a vital strip of wilderness. Andi Romito, Edmonton-based senior development officer with the NCC, calls it the “spine of the biosphere,” explaining it provides a natural corridor to wildlife searching for food, habitat and breeding areas. It’s a key area of focus for the NCC’s campaign. Thanks to a recent $200,000 Fueling Futures donation from Enbridge, the NCC is in the process of negotiating for the protection of two pieces of land along that spine, including a 160-acre, privately owned property. The world is currently celebrating Earth Week, and the 2022 theme for Earth Day is “invest in our planet.” At Enbridge, sustainability is central to everything we do. We’re supporting society’s transition to a lower-carbon future by pioneering new energy sources while continuing to provide access to affordable, reliable and increasingly sustainable low-emissions energy. Enbridge’s Fueling Futures program supports sustainability projects that help improve, grow and nurture our environment. By providing this $200,000 grant to the NCC’s American partner, the NCC has been able to leverage a three-to-one match from organizations such as the North American Waterfowl Conservation Association. That’s turned a $200,000 donation into an $800,000 investment in the future of Alberta’s biosphere—and represents the largest donation on the Beaver Hills project to date. With that funding in place, negotiations to place an easement on the land are expected to move forward quickly, Romito explains. It’s another example of collaboration, which has been a hallmark of the Beaver Hills conservation project. “The NCC is holding hands with groups of other people,” Romito says. “It’s not just the conservation organizations, it’s not just the government entities, working to conserve the area. It’s an entire community.” Under the terms of an easement, landowners continue to work their land, but agree to do so sustainably. “This is the future of conservation,” Romito adds. “People need to keep living on the land, and we can move ahead with stewardship work and land restoration work.” The NCC’s efforts have already led to results in Beaver Hills—wildlife is returning to the area, and at-risk populations are growing. “The flyways will be safe, and the wetlands will be intact for the animals. And the people who live there stay on their acreages and live their best life,” Romito says. “I heartily think that what we’re doing in Beaver Hills is what we need to be doing globally to make sure we’ll get the best future we can.” View additional multimedia and more ESG storytelling from Enbridge on 3blmedia.com

This relationship and this partnership are much more than a transactional experience.” "Having WiFi at the Lift Zone in the Olathe Unit is great because I can get my homework done right after school,” remarked 5 th Grade Olathe Lift Zone Club Member, Aleria H. “When my homework is completed, it allows me to have more free time when I get home. Ken's Krew: Championing Ability and Enabling Success

The Home Depot

Ken’s Krew is an organization that started in 1997 with support from Ken Langone, Home Depot co-founder. It was created with the belief that every individual deserves the chance to enter the workforce, earn a fair wage and reach their full potential. For this reason, Ken’s Krew provides job placement, training and support for individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities in competitive employment. Ken’s Krew works with corporate partners to develop employment opportunities and provide a supportive work environment for candidates. The Home Depot is proud to have partnered with Ken’s Krew since it began. There are currently 450 Krew members in 162 of our stores in nine states. Current Krew members have an average employment tenure of 5.9 years compared to the industry standard of six months. To help a Ken’s Krew member succeed, the company tailors training to the ability of each team member and works with them one-on-one for six to eight weeks. Additionally, their vocational coordinators provide ongoing workshops, skills development and opportunities for social networking. Store Manager Ben Heinze has experienced the positive impact of the program firsthand. “In my current store, I have two members of the Krew – Semaj and Adam. I am inspired daily by their positive, cheerful and grateful attitudes. One of our company’s primary goals is to provide great customer service, and these two are among the best I have. They have taught me and many other associates to put things in perspective, be grateful of the opportunities we have and to enjoy each other every day.” For Semaj, an associate who has taken on more responsibilities in her store every year, it’s an exciting opportunity to support her fellow Ken’s Krew members. From assisting the Georgia Krew vocational coordinator on the Zoom meetings to coaching safety in her own store, Semaj is always happy to get involved. “I love being a part of Ken’s Krew. I love teaching the other Krew members all the things I’ve learned at Home Depot.”  To learn more about Ken’s Krew, visit  kenskrew.org. Digital Equity Initiatives in Independence/Blue Springs

Comcast Greater Kansas City

One critical lesson from the COVID-19 crisis is the importance of a reliable home Internet connection. With schools closed, and people working remote, the Internet became, and still is, the sole means for connecting. But not everyone has equal access to the Internet. This is a major challenge in cities across the Kansas City metro, including Independence and Blue Springs, and it is something Comcast is working hard to address. Currently, Comcast and its partners are celebrating the 10-year anniversary of their Internet Essentials program, which is one of the longest running in-home Internet connectivity programs for low-income families in the nation. Over the last decade, Comcast has been connecting low-income Americans to the Internet through its Internet Essentials program, which has helped connect more than 10 million low-income Americans to the Internet at home including Independence and Blue Springs. While the program provides in-home broadband Internet service and an included WiFi router for $9.95/month, the onsite of the coronavirus epidemic galvanized the need for the company to try to do even more to help connect the unconnected. During the pandemic, Comcast launched two new programs to help: Lift Zones and Internet Essentials Partnership Program. Lift Zones provide free WiFi access in community centers where students and adults can get online. Lift Zones are designed to help those students who, for a variety of reasons, are unable to participate in distance learning at home. There are currently two active Lift Zones in the Greater Kansas City Area—two in Independence at the Boys & Girls Clubs. Also, during the pandemic Comcast introduced its Internet Essentials Partnership Program, designed to help accelerate Internet adoption. The program provides the opportunity for school districts and other organizations to fund and quickly connect large numbers of students and families to broadband access at home. Comcast has also partnered with the federal government’s Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) program to help those who need access to Internet at their home, learn virtually and stay informed. The benefit is available to new and existing Internet customers who qualify across all tiers of service. To see if you qualify go to https://www.xfinity.com/learn/internet-service/ebb. For Libet Ojeda, Internet Essentials meant educational stability for her children, continuing school online throughout 2020 and 2021, and additional language support for their Spanish-speaking family. “When the pandemic hit, I was fearful of what virtual support my family would have,” stated Libet Ojeda. “My two children are in 5th and 6th grade in the Fort Osage School District and when we had to be at home altogether we were thrilled that Internet Essentials gave us the option for uninterrupted support that was affordable. I cannot say enough about the importance the IE program has been for our family to have the stability to keep learning on the internet. My daughter suffers from dyslexia and the audio books she is able to use on her tablet has made a big difference in her progress. Without the Internet Essentials program she wouldn’t have the support she needs. My son is on the Individualized Education Plan and the IE support he continually receives for his listening and hearing needs is huge. We are a Spanish speaking family and the ability to also get language access support through the IE service has been a game changer for us and other families we know. We even received additional credits through the Comcast IE partnership with the EBB program.” “Ten years is a remarkable milestone, signifying an extraordinary amount of work and collaboration with our incredible community partners across the country,” said Dave Watson, Chief Executive Officer, Comcast Cable. “Together, we have been able to connect millions of people to the power of the Internet at home, and to the endless opportunity, education, growth, and discovery it provides. Today, we are rededicating ourselves to this mission to ensure that the next generation of students in America has the tools, resources, and abilities they need to succeed in an increasingly digital world.” “I would like to express my gratitude to the team at Comcast,” remarked Dr. Dred Scott, President & CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Kansas City. “Adding the Lift Zones to the Independence and Olathe Clubs to help our students access the Internet is huge. During the pandemic many of our youth were forced to learn from home without having the technology, hardware and infrastructure to support that learning. I want to thank each and every member of the Comcast team that made the Lift Zone initiatives possible within our Clubs. It means so much because of the connection they have with the club. This relationship and this partnership is much more than a transactional experience.” For more information about Internet Essentials and Comcast’s commitment to education and digital equity, please visit https://corporate.comcast.com/education. Black & Veatch Executive Jenn Shafer Named to Influential Kansas City Region Leadership Class

Black & Veatch

OVERLAND PARK, Kan., August 17, 2021 /3BL Media/ – Jennifer “Jenn” Shafer, associate vice president and director of dispute resolution for Black & Veatch, has been named to the Civic Council of Greater Kansas City’s (CCGKC) latest “Kansas City Tomorrow” leadership class. Shafer joins 28 other area business, nonprofit and public sector executives in the program’s 43 rd class, which begins its 10-month run on Aug. 27. The curriculum of the monthly, daylong sessions focuses on many of the region’s most-pressing issues – education, economic development, diversity and inclusion, and the “KC Rising” initiative, to name a few – and its opportunities. The program seeks to prepare its participants for regional civic leadership roles and to foster new, deep relationships with class members. Members of the incoming class were nominated earlier this year and selected through a competitive process that included in-person interviews. Shafer, who joined Black & Veatch in November 2011 as a senior claims and litigation attorney, was named the global infrastructure solutions leader’s director of dispute resolution in March 2016 and associate vice president in February 2019. “As someone dedicated to taking on and resolving complex matters, I’m honored to be chosen for this special opportunity to play an exciting role in addressing this region’s challenges and opportunities,” Shafer said. “For more than a century, Black & Veatch has been a staple of the Kansas City area, dedicated to adding value to the communities we serve here and around the world. This leadership class will help me extend that mission on a more personal level in this place I proudly call home.” Mark Hill, the Civic Council of Greater Kansas City’s president, said the organization hopes “many of these KCT participants will go on to take a leadership role on an important community issue,” perhaps by serving in appointed or elected office, joining a nonprofit board or community task force, “or stepping up in some other way in our region.” Once the program is completed, participants are eligible to join the KCT Alumni Association, an independent, non-profit organization that allows the program’s more than 990 graduates to stay connected. Black & Veatch's Una Nowling Wins Kansas City-Area 'STEMMy' Award for Diversity Efforts

Black & Veatch

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.,  August 13, 2021 /3BL Media/ – Since coming out as a transgender woman in 2012, Black & Veatch’s Una Nowling has championed efforts to educate locally and globally about gender diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) in science, technology, engineering, math and medicine (STEMM). That commitment now is being recognized with one of Kansas City region’s premier awards for advocacy for women in STEMM. Nowling, a leader in the global infrastructure solutions company’s power business, has been named the recipient of this year’s “Women in STEMM Champion Award” by the Central Exchange, a 41-year-old community for Kansas City-area women leaders. Known as a “STEMMy,” the honor recognizes a man or woman in a STEMM-related field or affiliation who has a vision for gender equality and advocates for women in STEMM, either by supporting them pursuing or furthering STEMM careers or by promoting women in his or her workplace or community. The Central Exchange awards, now in their eighth year, recognize business and civic leaders, students, educators, entrepreneurs and advocates who collaborate on boosting gender diversity in the regional business ecosystem. Beyond her work at Black & Veatch, Nowling is a researcher and historian who hosts an LGBTQIA+ -focused program on Kansas City Community Radio’s KFKI-FM. She frequently is a lecturer to city councils, businesses, universities and high schools, STEM societies, counseling centers and medical groups, along the way mentoring other transgender and intersex people in and beyond Kansas City, including in the United Kingdom, India and Thailand. She is also an adjunct professor who teaches engineering classes at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. “I’m honored and humbled to receive the Champion Award, knowing all that it signifies in the effort to bring about greater gender equity – something I’m passionate about,” Nowling said. “Having walked the walk on both sides of the gender divide, I have a unique perspective to share, and I’m committed through my listen-first approach to helping provide pathways to solutions to greater equity rights for women and others in the LGBTQIA+ community. I also am very grateful for the overwhelmingly positive support I have been given and continue to receive at every level by Black & Veatch, my co-workers and my clients.” “For more than four decades, the Central Exchange has worked to empower and connect women across generations, industries and perspectives while promoting equity for women,” said Ann Hackett, Central Exchange Bloch Leader. “Una has personified that in her thoughts and actions, helping build the bridges that can and will foster greater gender equity and meaningful change. It’s for that unwavering advocacy that Una truly deserves this year’s Champion Award.” About Black & Veatch Black & Veatch is an employee-owned global engineering, procurement, consulting and construction company with a more than 100-year track record of innovation in sustainable infrastructure. Since 1915, we have helped our clients improve the lives of people around the world by addressing the resilience and reliability of our most important infrastructure assets. Kenan Fellows Program and Biogen Foundation Collaborate to Advance Workforce Education

Biogen

RALEIGH, N.C., June 23, 2021 /3BL Media/ – N.C. State University’s Kenan Fellows Program for Teacher Leadership, a statewide collaborative that is leading transformation in education and advancing local workforce development, announced today that it has received a grant from the Biogen Foundation to launch the Triangle area pilot of STEMwork, an innovative new professional development program for K-12 educators. “Students are best set up for success when educators are empowered to deliver robust STEM education tailored specifically for career opportunities,” said Melissa Seymour, Global Head of Quality and Chief Quality Officer, Biogen Foundation Board member. “The Biogen Foundation is proud to support the Kenan Fellows Program. STEMwork is well aligned to develop students in a way to help them build skills aligned with the needs of local employers.” STEMwork grows out of the need to close the skills gap that many North Carolina STEM industries encounter. A North Carolina Department of Commerce survey found that almost 60 percent of the state’s STEM-related industries report struggling to find enough qualified candidates to fill open positions. This problem can be traced to a lack of skilled workers moving into the STEM career pipeline. STEMwork gives educators the tools they need to establish and sustain education–business partnerships with local STEM employers. These partnerships are critical in preparing students for STEM careers while offering local businesses the opportunity to foster their next generation of talent. “The Kenan Fellows Program has a 20-year history of bringing together teacher leaders and STEM professionals. STEMwork allows us to leverage our network of over 500 alumni in order to scale our mission in ways that are sustainable and equitable across the state,” said Elaine Franklin, director of the Kenan Fellows Program. “We are grateful for industry leaders like the Biogen Foundation, which has been a longtime supporter of our program, and a champion of advancing STEM education.” STEMwork is a year-long blended (online and offline) professional development program which includes eight online asynchronous sessions, industry visits, and meet-ups with facilitators and their team members. As part of the program, teachers will go into local industries where they will learn about the variety of STEM jobs that are available in their local community. With the guidance of a facilitator trained by the Kenan Fellows Program, the teachers will learn how to use this knowledge to breathe new life into the subjects they teach. Upon completion, the teachers will have developed a one-of-a-kind Project-Based Learning (PBL) unit that can be implemented in their classrooms, and shared with colleagues. Research on PBL has shown the approach to yield numerous benefits, particularly in terms of student engagement and building competencies essential to college and career readiness. Thanks to the Biogen Foundation, the Kenan Fellows Program is able to offer the program to 43 teachers in the Triangle area, which is only one of two regions in the state selected for the 2020-21 pilot. Teachers participating in the pilot will attend for free and receive a $200 stipend to support the implementation of their PBL unit. A variety of local industries are participating in virtual and in-person site visits including Biogen, Cornerstone Building Brands, SAS, Red Hat, EPA, US Army Corps of Engineers, Cisco, Glen Raven, Carolina Biological, and Labcorp. Comcast Increases Its Fastest Internet Speeds Over WiFi Across Kansas City Service Area

Twin Cities

Comcast today announced that, starting April 22, it will increase speeds of the fastest Xfinity Internet tier in the company’s Kansas City service area. Customers will be able to take advantage of advanced WiFi technology capable of delivering speeds faster than one Gigabit per second (Gbps) to support the ever-increasing number of connected devices in their homes. The upgrade to Xfinity Gigabit service is part of a national rollout that began this year. Additionally, Xfinity Performance Starter customers in the Kansas City area will see their download speed increase from 25 Megabits per second (Mbps) to 50 Mbps. These upgrades will be made at no additional cost to customers who will benefit from the new speeds. “We recognize that Comcast plays an important role in helping our customers stay connected, so we are constantly advancing our Internet product with new innovation,” said J.D. Keller, regional senior vice president, Comcast. “Our state-of-the-art gateways with WiFi 6 technology, wall-to-wall WiFi coverage, personalized tools and controls, and advanced cybersecurity are all helping to make our customers’ connectivity experience better than ever.” Comcast is also one of the first U.S. Internet service providers to offer a WiFi 6 Certified gateway with the latest version of its xFi Advanced Gateway, which is capable of delivering multi-Gigabit speeds via ethernet and laying the groundwork for Gigabit speeds over WiFi. Customers on the new upgraded Xfinity Gigabit tier will require an xFi Advanced Gateway, or one of the WiFi 6 capable devices approved to work with the Xfinity network to receive the faster speeds. Comcast will reach out to Gigabit Internet customers who need to upgrade their equipment at no additional cost if they don’t have a capable device in their home. Performance Starter customers will not require new equipment to take advantage of this speed increase. Increased internet speeds support faster connections and more capacity to support the growing number of smart home devices that are being added to home WiFi networks today and in the future. According to The Xfinity Cyber Health Report, some customers have dozens of devices in their homes. In fact, Xfinity xFi users have on average 12 devices per home, adding two devices over the past year; meanwhile, high-end users have as many as 33 devices and with five added over the past year. Comcast’s Xfinity Gigabit Internet service is delivered using Comcast’s existing network architecture and the connections already in most customers’ homes. In its Kansas City area footprint, the company also offers Gigabit Pro, a 2Gbps fiber-based synchronous broadband service that is twice as fast as any other offering available in the residential market. Since 2017 alone, Comcast has devoted more than $15 billion to strengthening and expanding its network – including building more than 33,000 new route miles of fiber. Every 2.5 years the company adds as much capacity to the network as in all previous years combined. Comcast’s residential broadband service is powered by xFi – a simple, digital dashboard for Xfinity customers to control their home WiFi network. In addition to parental control features like pausing WiFi and screen time scheduling, xFi provides content filters that ensure younger children can only access age-appropriate content. xFi also comes with xFi Advanced Security, which protects all the devices connected to a customer's home network from malware and other security threats. xFi can be accessed via the Xfinity mobile app (iOS and Android), or on the TV, on X1 and Flex, with the Xfinity Voice Remote. The feature is available at no extra cost to Xfinity Internet customers who lease a compatible xFi gateway.
