According to the landmark 5G Economy study published by IHS Markit, 5G’s full economic effect will likely be realized across the globe in 2035 – supporting a wide range of industries and potentially enabling up to $13.1 trillion in global sales activity. 1 The study also revealed that the 5G value chain (including OEMs, operators, content creators, app developers and consumers) could alone support up to 22.8 million jobs. And, because there are many emerging and new applications that will still be defined in the future, only time will tell what the full “5G effect” on the economy is going to be. Furthermore, mobile technologies at large deliver sustainability benefits. 5G networks are more energy efficient per traffic unit than 4G networks, helping reduce carbon emissions from mobile networks by 50% over the next 10 years. 2 For instance, network architectures with centralized functions (e.g., via open RAN technology) allow locating the network functions at centralized sites with easier access to renewable energy sources, as well as better resource multiplexing/pooling. 5G can also help to reduce pollution. For example, a 5G drone using artificial learning and machine learning to perform targeted weed eradication can reduce pesticide and herbicide usage by 50%. 3 And a 5G enabled intelligent transportation system can lead to 15% less traffic and as a result pollution emitted by vehicles. 4 Because 5G enabled devices are developed to have a longer battery lifetime compared to previous technologies, they contribute to increases in energy efficiency and productivity, which not only delivers sustainability benefits, but cost benefits too. In agriculture, 5G sensors equipped with long battery life and the ability to connect remote locations can monitor many types of equipment and conditions such as, tank levels, soil moisture and chemical content. This can then reduce truck roll expense related to replenishment and can optimize schedules for watering and the application of fertilizer. 5 Connectivity – Smartphones powered by Snapdragon are always connected 6 while minimizing power consumption. In any given smartphone powered by Snapdragon, there are various Qualcomm Technologies wireless solutions designed to allow you to access the internet, your Internet of Things (IoT) devices at home, GPS, and other devices. The ultimate goal is to improve safety, provide reliable travel times, support autonomous vehicles and deliver communication directly to motorists. “The AIVIA consortium is looking to the future,” said Dr. Dan Chen, president of 3M’s Transportation Safety Division. “This initiative brings together industry leaders who know what it takes to operate a roadway and understand the different pieces needed to make the connected roads of the future possible.” The initiative is focused on developing 5G smart roads that use advanced monitoring, through sensors and simulation technology, to improve the roadway experience. “The overarching ambition of AIVIA is to develop a holistic, long-term solution for improving road safety and road capacity while accelerating the adoption of connected and autonomous vehicles in mixed traffic scenarios,” said Adrian Talbot, Head of Centre of Excellence for Mobility at Ferrovial. A successful pilot: The North Tarrant Express One of the AIVIA consortium’s first successful projects, and an early demonstration of what the connected roads of the future will look like, is the North Tarrant Express (NTE) connecting Dallas and Fort Worth. This 11-mile stretch of roadway presented an opportunity to upgrade a major expressway with the latest in traffic infrastructure technology including the 3M™ Impact Detection System. The system is an easy-to-install monitoring solution that provides real-time data and impact notifications for critical roadway infrastructure like crash cushions, guardrails, signs and traffic barriers. So-called “detection nodes” identify when a vehicle hits these key pieces of infrastructure and sends a warning to the traffic management center. That reduces the need for field surveys and minimizes the time it takes for road crews to search for damaged infrastructure. “As we look to tackle small-scale physical enhancements that improve safety, such as better lane markings, as well as major enhancements, like adding a digital layer to roadways, the 3M Impact Detection System addresses both,” said Talbot. Building on the Success of the NTE Following the success of the NTE project, AIVIA is now looking to the future as it takes the next steps to build safer, more efficient and more connected roads. The AIVIA Consortium wants a greater understanding of what’s happening in free-flowing traffic. For example, implementing digital sensors that automatically detect accidents and monitor vehicle behavior could help the team better mitigate or even prevent accidents. “AIVIA can help federal agencies and state DOTs think differently about roadways,” said Chen. “How do we take advantage of the technologies that are being deployed on vehicles, such as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and increasing levels of autonomy? How do we use connected technology to improve the resiliency and efficiency of freight? How do drivers and road users interact with both physical and digital infrastructure? Marek's Take: The Greening of the Gs

Many years ago, I wrote about solar-powered cell sites being used in mobile networks. At that time, the wireless industry was in the early stages of thinking about “green” technologies and those solar-powered cell sites were primarily intended for developing the countries where there was no established electrical grid. Today green business practices are an integral part of the wireless industry. Not only is it good for the environment but it’s also good for business. Companies that are considered “green” or committed to energy-saving initiatives are popular with consumers and with investors. Many operators around the globe are starting to work toward becoming more sustainable and reducing their energy usage. According to the GSMA’s 2021 Mobile Industry Impact Report on Sustainability, about 31% of operators by connections worldwide and 36% of operators by revenue worldwide have set carbon reduction targets to be net zero by 2050. In the U.S., Verizon and AT&T have said they will be carbon neutral across their entire operations by 2035. And Verizon in 2021 launched a $1 billion green bond that will be used for its sustainability efforts. T-Mobile, meanwhile, set a goal of using 100% renewable energy by the end of 2021 and earlier in the year it reported it had nearly met that goal. The company is currently in the process of auditing all of its work in that area. T-Mobile also has a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 95%. And those solar-powered cell sites that I remember writing about 20 years ago are now just one of many technological advancements that can make networks more efficient and reduce the industry’s carbon footprint. 5G is a step in the right direction Just upgrading networks from 4G to 5G is a big step toward making wireless networks more energy efficient. According to the November 2021 Ericsson Mobility Report, mobile traffic has grown dramatically over the past 10 years but service providers’ global network energy consumption has only increased 64%. Ericsson attributes this to improvements in technology that makes it possible for the industry to only marginally increase its energy consumption despite the huge increase in data traffic. Patrik Lundqvist, senior director of technical marketing at Qualcomm, agrees that 5G is inherently more efficient than 4G. “The energy per bit sent is a big improvement in 5G,” he said. “And that efficiency itself is creating savings for the environment.” Reducing energy costs is not only good for the environment, it’s also good for the bottom line. Bhushan Joshi, head of sustainability and corporate responsibility at Ericsson North America, says that about 30% of a mobile operator’s operating expenses are devoted to paying for the energy costs of running a network. In a typical urban setting, Joshi said that about 30% of cell sites drive about 75% of the traffic. That means that if operators upgrade their urban base stations to the more energy efficient 5G equipment, they can reduce their energy costs. And in rural areas where 70% of the cell sites drive about 25% of the traffic, operators also can benefit from upgrading those sites, particularly as the industry becomes more adept at powering down cell sites when they aren’t in use. Researchers at Ericsson noted in the company’s latest Mobility Report that during gaps in data transmissions, wireless operators can reduce power consumption by putting certain components into “sleep mode” and then activating those components when data transmissions are high. These sleep mode gaps are very short in the 4G standard. However, with the 5G New Radio standard this sleep mode feature is better supported because the base stations have been designed specifically for it. Qualcomm’s Lundqvist said that amplifiers and base stations are two of the biggest consumers of energy in the network and base stations alone account for about 50% of the energy used to power a network. Qualcomm, not surprisingly, is working to make amplifiers and base stations more energy efficient. Lundqvist also said that edge networking (which is a big part of 5G) also creates energy savings because as more network intelligence is pushed to the edge, it not only makes the network more efficient, it also saves on power throughout the network. Not surprisingly, the 3GPP standards body is getting involved in the efforts to make mobile networks more sustainable and making green networks a part of its future standards. In fact, Release 18, which is referred to as 5G Advanced, makes green networks a priority. Although work on Release 18 is just getting under way, the 3GPP has said that as part of this release, it will define a base station energy consumption model as well provide power consumption reduction techniques. In addition, it will incorporate energy consumption into various deployment scenarios, including sub-7 GHz spectrum and both urban and rural deployments. Not only is 3GPP looking at making mobile networks greener, ATIS’ Next G Alliance is also working on what is it calling the “ Green G,” which is an effort to establish North America as a leader in 6G and also a leader in reducing 6G’s environmental impact. Green G is a catchy slogan and I suspect we’ll be hearing a lot more about how the telecom industry can not only reduce its carbon footprint, but also how technologies such as 5G and 6G can help other industries also reduce their environmental impact as well. T-Mobile makes it easy for customers to be themselves. New and existing T-Mobile MONEY customers can now request a new debit card with their chosen name through the T-Mobile MONEY app or website. Simply go to Settings, toggle on True Name, add your chosen name, review your card and T-Mobile MONEY will mail it to you. Customers can also use their True Name when reaching out to T-Mobile MONEY Specialists for help. And all T-Mobile customers can have their chosen name displayed on Caller ID by going to their account’s Profile Settings on My T-Mobile.
