Axiata to commercialise Open RAN for network leadership across emerging Asia

Axiata Group Berhad

First and only Open RAN commercial pilots in Sri Lanka and Malaysia First Open RAN solution commercially deployed with satellite backhaul First commercial deployment of TIP's Evenstar Split 7.2. Radio Unit (RU) architecture Network modernisation gains traction as Axiata positions for network leadership across its footprint, with the commercial deployment of 2G and 4G single RAN Open RAN matching the performance of incumbents in brown field environment. Key strategic partnerships formed with world-class network solutions providers, Mavenir, Parallel Wireless and global IT giant Infosys lead to successful Open RAN commercial pilots in Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - Media OutReach - 28 June 2021 - Axiata Group Berhad ("Axiata" or "the Group") has embarked on an ambitious network transformation program, leveraging Open Radio Access Networks (Open RAN) as a key technology for mobile networks designed to narrow the digital divide and enhance rural connectivity across Asia. Eyeing large scale commercial deployments by year end, the Group has successfully conducted Open RAN commercial field pilots in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka through strategic partnerships with leading global network solutions providers Mavenir and Parallel Wireless and supported by Infosys as systems integrator (SI). Through its strategic partnership with Mavenir, the industry's end to end network software provider, Axiata has deployed the MAVair Open vRAN solution including all G Open RAN, Packet Core and Mobile Network applications at selected sites, in Malaysia, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. To simulate non-ideal backhaul conditions, especially for rural areas, the sites selected are connected with non-ideal backhaul (microwave links), and in some cases satellite, making this the first satellite backhaul powered Open vRAN sites in the world. During the testing phase, Axiata was also able to achieve the first live commercial service integration of the Telecom Infra Project (TIP)'s Evenstar 4G Radio through Mavenir's MAVair O-RAN based solution for Open RAN. Axiata is a participant of the TIP initiative in which a global community of companies and organisations are working together to accelerate the development and deployment of open, disaggregated and standards-based technology solutions that deliver high quality, low cost connectivity. Axiata's commercial pilot also encompassed a collaboration with Parallel Wireless, the US-based Open RAN company delivering all G, cloud-native Open RAN solutions. Axiata successfully demonstrated commercial deployment of 2G and 4G Open RAN connectivity within its network in Sri Lanka which is operated by Dialog Axiata. Parallel Wireless's solutions enabled 2G and 4G technology to be installed on the same radio units, with baseband deployed on a x86 commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) platform, and all other applications deployed on Axiata's OpenStack cloud infrastructure. The field trials now elevated to commercial availability, included 3-Sector, 4-Sector and 6-Sector sites, and demonstrated high quality network performance. End user experience was demonstrated to be seamless and, in some cases, superior in terms of mobile broadband experience including next generation voice services. Commercial deployment encompassed rural, sub-urban and urban environments. The paradigm shift in telco networks towards Open RAN requires system integration capabilities to bring together the ecosystem of disaggregated components using standardised open interfaces on general purpose hardware and ensuring interoperability in a carrier grade environment. Axiata was supported by Infosys in executing multi-faceted system integrations required to demonstrate the comprehensive coverage of Open RAN configuration options. Thomas Hundt, Axiata's Group Executive Vice President – Technology said, "Open RAN is the future for mobile networks, and it will be critical for 4G expansions as well as the 5G evolution that Axiata's markets will soon embrace. Aligning with our vision to become The Next Generation Digital Champion, the benefits from open networks will enable Axiata to better serve rising connectivity needs across the region, especially in rural and underserved areas, whilst ensuring sustainable value creation for our stakeholders." "Together with our partners Mavenir, Parallel Networks and Infosys, and in line with the global connectivity push under the Telecom Infrastructure Project, Axiata is committed towards embracing fully automated infrastructure to boost the open networks ecosystem in Asia. Our successful trials in Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Indonesia prove that Open RAN solutions enable greater operational and cost efficiencies using advanced technologies, whilst also meeting the needs of our digital inclusion efforts across the region. We look forward to taking the next step towards commercialization in our pursuit of catalyzing game-changing advancements across emerging Asia," he said. Pardeep Kohli, Mavenir President and CEO said, "Mavenir is delighted to work with Axiata on their radio network transformation initiative and to achieve excellent results in the live everyday environment, proving the extreme flexibility of Open vRAN. The collaboration will transform existing networks into a dynamic, agile and cloud-native based platform where Mavenir and Axiata will build the Networks of the Future." Keith Johnson, President of Parallel Wireless said, "We are honored to partner with Axiata, replacing their incumbent vendors equipment with our leading-edge Open RAN Solution to enable 2G and 4G broadband services in Sri Lanka and other Axiata subsidiaries. We are thrilled that the trials are successful, and we look forward to the commercial deployments in 2021." Anand Swaminathan, EVP & Global Industry Leader, Communications, Media & Technology Infosys said, "Open RAN is transforming the wireless architecture and is enabling Telecom operators to be more competitive and innovative, while providing them flexibility in RAN component suppliers' ecosystem. The successful completion of the field trial on live network was a major milestone for accelerating the scaled deployment of virtual and Open RAN networks. Infosys is excited to be the SI partner to Axiata in this transformational journey and is committed to stand together to achieve many more milestones in the near future." Writing a New Chapter in Mobile Learning

Qualcomm

In the last fifteen months, education systems across the world have seen the need for student access to digital devices and reliable connectivity exacerbated as schools adapted to new teaching models in response to the pandemic. More than a billion students across the globe were confronted with the new reality of remote learning; many of whom were left behind, without the adequate digital tools and means to connect to their classrooms. Now, educators are assessing how to better prepare for a new chapter of learning to address all student’s mobile learning needs. Innovative classroom environments and self-directed student learning have been core instruction pillars, long valued by educators. Digital tools and resources have become increasingly pervasive in classrooms over the past 10 years; mobile devices in the hands of students have helped both teachers and administrators realize the better student outcomes that un-tethered learning enables. According to longitudinal research from Project Tomorrow®, a national education nonprofit organization: Teachers are significantly more likely to attribute student success to the positive impact of mobile devices in their classroom than ever before. 75% of teachers now say that their students are better prepared for college and career success because they have a digital device to support –a 32% increase since 2017. By the 2018-19 school year, 66% of American school districts reported that they were providing students with a mobile device (tablet, laptop or Chromebook) to use in school, though far fewer had implemented programs that allowed students to take devices home. Many students were challenged to connect at home and in their communities, which made streaming virtual classes a serious obstacle. This resulted in an ineffective learning experience for and a high degree of frustration for teachers. Educators have emerged from this past years’ experience with a new list of “must-haves” when it comes to enabling effective teaching and learning. Whether students are at desks in the classroom or at the kitchen table at home, education models need to evolve to provide continuity for student instruction. Educators are utilizing online content and tools more than ever before, and as students prepare to return to school this year, the increase demand for connectivity will test the limits of in-school infrastructure. Today, more than 50% of district technology leaders say their schools have intermittent problems with internet access and connectivity speeds Educators and leaders have underscored the importance of capturing the lessons learned throughout the pandemic to be utilized for the design of more a more effective and equitable student learning experience..  As educators write this new, post-pandemic chapter of mobile learning, the following requirements for mobile devices are rising in relevancy:  A new generation of mobile devices must be always connected to the Internet to ensure students have untethered access to the online resources that are part of their new learning playbook. Longer multi-day battery life is essential as students depend more on their devices to facilitate both teacher-led and student-directed learning. Teachers are using more video, multi-media content and online apps than ever before within their lessons, so devices must have the capacity to access and stream those resources without interrupting the learning process. New devices should mirror the key functions of smartphones to support sustained student engagement.   To learn more about the new generation of mobile devices needed to support today’s students and teachers, check out this infographic created by Project Tomorrow and the Qualcomm® Wireless Reach™ Initiative. About Project Tomorrow Project Tomorrow’s nonprofit mission is to support the effective implementation of research-based learning experiences for students in K-12 schools.  Project Tomorrow is particularly interested in the role of digital tools, content and resources in supporting students’ development of college and career ready skills.  The organization’s landmark research is the Speak Up Research Project which annually polls K-12 students, parents, educators and community members about the impact of technology resources on learning experiences both in school and out of school, and represents the largest collection of authentic, unfiltered stakeholder voice on digital learning. Since 2003, over 6 million K-12 students, parents, teachers, librarians, principals, technology leaders, district administrators and members of the community have shared their views and ideas through the Speak Up Project.  In addition, Project Tomorrow regularly designs and implements evaluation and efficacy studies on behalf of school districts, nonprofits, museums, foundations and companies to understand the impact of digital tools, content and resources on student outcomes and teacher effectiveness.  Learn more at www.tomorrow.org. Graphic novel tackles disinformation around COVID-19 Vaccine and critical 5G infrastructure

Stockwood Strategy

Sophisticated social media campaigns sponsored by bad state actors are responsible for creating and spreading disinformation around the critical Covid-19 Vaccine and emerging infrastructure such as 5G technology for communications. Erly Stage Studios has today published Bug Bytes, the digital graphic novel, which sheds a light on the disruptive forces at work. This book is the second installment of the graphic novels that are a part of the Resilience Series commissioned by the US Cyber Infrastructure and Security Agency (CISA). Bug Bytes will inform and educate people on the dangers and risks associated with dis- and mis- information through fictional stories inspired by real-world events. In Bug Bytes, readers will meet the protagonist Ava Williams, a journalist and academic, patriot and member of Symous - a group fighting disinformation and foreign interference in elections as polling day approaches. Ava’s life gets tangled up in a web of lies as her father, a 5G technician gets hurt and she works to understand what a seemingly innocent poll online related to 5G technology has to do with the 5G Vaccine? Ava is surprised by the reaction of the anti-vaccination community at what is proven to be engineered data and has the unenviable task of making the case to the public at large for how they can be weary on data online with unproven provenance. Farid Haque, founder and CEO of Erly Stage Studios commented: “We’re delighted to have been commissioned by CISA to create a practical and engaging communication tool that highlights the existential threat of disinformation in the context of bad state actors. While the story is fictional many of the approaches shown are very much grounded in the reality of the technology we live with and are exposed to almost daily.” Bug Bytes provides a unique education for the reader about the world of social media and how digital resources can be hijacked to serve a more nefarious agenda. The ability for foreign bad state actors to weld this kind of influence on another nation is unprecedented as is their ability to twist and manipulate a narrative to use domestic groups to do their bidding. The work helps the reader understand the need to exercise care when it comes to consuming news and information via social media platforms and online sources of information. In the story, Ava Williams and a team of patriots are racing against the clock to shine a spotlight on the source of disinformation engineered to hurt critical communication infrastructure and damage the Vaccine roll-out efforts. Ava’s investigative journalism leads her through the metaverse to find allies and discovers through hard graft that foreign actors are tinkering with public data to maliciously mislead and influence perceptions of 5G as a communications technology and its fabricated link to vaccine effectiveness. “Bug Bytes is the culmination of the wealth of experience that Clint Watts brings in cyber warfare and disinformation and our studio’s creative direction and storytelling style. We spent months researching the real life incidents and then wrapped them into a fictional story” added Farid Haque. The graphic novel is being made available by CISA to the general public online as a free resource as the Covid19 vaccine roll out continues to have an impact across the United States and the world at large. The work is available for free for the public and media to read at the following URL: https://www.cisa.gov/cfi-resilience-series-graphic-novels. A first title in the series was released a few months earlier last year ahead of the US elections titled Real Fakes.
